JS 440 has water in engine compartment

Hello everyone. I have a 440 which works great, but after every ride it has some water in the bottom of the engine compartment, about 1-2 inches deep. Is this normal?

Re: JS 440 has water in engine compartment

The tube after the waterbox had a cut and i replaced it but it still gathers water. I can't find any other leakage. When i run the ski in the yard with the water hose i don't see anything suspicious. Only after riding it in the sea there is water in it. Is it impossible that the water gets in the engine compartment from the vent on the hood?

It can get in from the hood, check your hood seal. The ski has a siphon bilge pump that sucks this small amount of water out using pump vacuum. You should check to see if it is intact. I always have a little water in my hulls after riding, not several inches though.

Re: JS 440 has water in engine compartment

all old skis get some water intrusion from varios places ,hood seals , pole grommets (where the cables go), vents , etc , if you are real concerned fit an electric bilge pump , trying to track leaks in old skis is near impossible ,so long as all your electrics are sealed ,it should not be an issue ...

How many hours of riding does it take to fill with that much water, my 97GTI fills with water also but take all day and normally it fills in choppy water smooth bays or bayous don't seem to take on as much water so it's probably coming in from aground the seat and hood seals

Well, maybe I overstated a little bit about the depth of the water. It is always below the filter of the bilge, so I guess it 's not anything abnormal. The only problem is that the water splashes and soaks everything in there, causing rust on some places of the engine. Any idea of solving this?

I also like to keep my engine and hoses, wires covered in silicone spray to avoid the rust

Unless almost everything is sealed very well and you ride very cautiously in flat water you will get water inside. It certainly sounds like yours is normal. Leave the hood propped open when the ski is not in use and spray with some sort of lubricant to cut down on the rust. If you ride in salt water then wash down and rinse the cooling system and engine compartment.
