I also support the 550 based motor and no tubbies. Keep it cheap, squirelly and fun! Just my opinion, whatever is decided I will be back next year. Hopefully the decision is made soon, so if I need to drop in an 800 with pump and tubbies I can get started on it pronto.

I can respect everyones opinion but on not wanting big motors and tubbies but putting more rules on a 550 class is just going to kill the class! I understand tubbies are not vintage but it's just a handling component

    Re: Vintage Ski Rule Changes

    The following is merely a compilation of many of the great ideas in this thread, with some additional thoughts;

    Scope: Vintage Stand-up 1976-1996

    Goals for WF 2014:
    - 20 riders at WF 2014.
    - Make performance criteria as even as possible, with MINIMAL governance by rules.
    - Minimize barriers to entry. Minimize Costs.
    - Remember FUN, for you and the crowd.

    Two classes:
    1. 440/550 hulls: Original Vintage:
    - This represents the true vintage era and pays homage to traditional roots of the sport.

    2. 650/750/SJ hulls: Vintage Evolution:
    - Represents the time of next evolution of stand-ups in the sport.

    Class Structure:
    - Combine both classes into 1 race. Unless numbers can make a second class race.
    - Have contingency plan on how to split classes if more than 20 entries apply.
    - Scrutinize only the top 4 places, after race. Onus is on rider to comply with rules and safety.

    Smaller/ Tighter course:
    - Brings rider skill more to the fore
    - Will help with reliability of older parts, and older riders.
    - Better crowd spectacle.

    Logjump:
    - Position in front of the crowd (preferably in front of the Beer taps)
    - These were always great to watch, especially after a few brews.
    - Workout a simple solution for placement.

    No Pump conversions:
    - No matter what CC's you run you still need to process the HP. Water throughput is limited by Pump volume.
    - Whilst not perfect, it helps keep the class field level. Less expense.

No CC limit: (2 cylinder limit)
    - We all know the so called 550's of the day were never 550 cc's. It's hard to police.
    - With pumps limited to their respective hull designs, it attenuates the extra HP.
    - Whilst not perfect, it helps keep the class field level. Less expense.

    No Tubbies/Sponsons:
    - If it wasn't allowed back in the day, then not today.
    - Enjoy the additional challenge, it adds fun.
    - Helps keep ALL the field level. Less expense.

    Rideplates:
    - No fins/skegs. For Rider Safety.

In all endeavours, you do need some constraints for it provides the very challenge that keeps it interesting.

OMG.....Rules for 550 vintage ski class..550 ski riders do not conform to any kind of rules. That is why you are riding a 550 ski in the first place. Rules suck. The 550 vintage ski class is a just for fun exhibition show up and race class. Do not ruin it with any kind of rules.

See you Nancies on the line at Parker, AZ in 2014.

PS...the rule book will be in my 550 pump
88 bullet reed 550.. if your 550 can beat it.. you can have mine.

    X2.
Everyone in this thread (including myself) sounds like they want specific rules so their ski can have an advantage. Just make it no rules. If you want to win just go faster than everyone else. Many of the other classes in this sport have tons of drama, it looks like this class is heading in the same direction. You guys can do what you'd like and vote for whatever. I'll be on the line next year wether my ski is legal or not. I don't even care if I fail tech. It's just a 550 race.

It's at many different events. Finals is just the biggest one.

I believe it is allowed at any IJSBA sanctioned race in every region. Whether or not it is offered is most likely due to the attendance level. I know here in Region 1 Ross Wallach looks for at least five dedicated and ready to go racers before the class is offered. Our last race before Finals we were up to around 13.
