I think I have my elec problem figured out but will bookmark this for future reference. Thanks for a great piece of info JSS.

Re: ELECTRICAL / IGNITION PROBLEMS guide

I have the correct voltages from the charge and pulser coils. Checking the output of the CDI to the coil with the coil disconnected, I'm reading 28 volts while cranking.

Connecting the coil wires and testing the voltage at accross them while cranking and I get 0 volts.

The ski was running fine and just quit. Based on this would the problem most likely be the ignition coil or the CDI?

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

      Thanks,
      Barry

Re: ELECTRICAL / IGNITION PROBLEMS guide

Reading zero volts across an impedance that small is absolutely normal. That isn't your problem.

Without the coil, you basically have voltage across an open circuit.
With the coil connected, you got what amounts to a short = no voltage.

what should the voltage be going into the ignition coil? I am talking about the orange and black wires while cranking.

I just replaced my ignition coil and I still have no spark. I was seeing about 24 VAC on the orange/black wires going to the coil while cranking. And I have the stop button disconnected.

You will not be able to measure it. It's a fast transient waveform.

Make sure all your connections are good, and all your grounds are good and together.
After that, try a different stator and see if that helps

I think the Clymer service book lists a vlaue for this, but I don't have it with me. Will look this evening.

I did a little more troubleshooting today, and it looks like I hava a bad CDI and lighting coil. I am seeing about 1.5 Ohms on between both green wires and ground. Also I am seeing about 28VAC off of the charge coil and 4VAC off of the pulser coil-and both of these Ohm out to spec. Since the ignition coil is new, that leaves the CDI.

You should see between 1.1 and 1.5 Ohms between the two green wires, and and open circuit from either green wire to ground.
What makes you think it's bad?

Does any of this info work for the 650? Mine totally lost spark over the weekend, and I need to know where to look. Took the stop/start switch apart to remove that from the situation, and still had no spark.

Thanks, now I can go check it. Maybe I can even have it fixed by this weekend

Re: ELECTRICAL / IGNITION PROBLEMS guide

Can you please tell me exactly where to put the probes when I'm doing this test?

                              4. Ignition coil. Not many folks do not have a meter capable of resolving the almost dead short of the primary on this coil. But if you do, the resistance should be .078 to .106 DON'T forget to subtract the meter leads resistance by shorting together and subtracting, or adjusting the zero ohms pot, if you have it. Also, remove and insert the leads in the sockets to clean the connection.....I often see 1 ohm or more go down to .2 or .3 by performing this task.
NEXT, check the health of your spark plug wires, or high tension wires as the Brits like to say. The only way to test them properly is to remove the boots and get to the end of the wire. You can try jamming the point of the meter probes into the end, but due to the dirt and metal dust, it often does NOT give a solid connection / reading. If you have electrical contact cleaner, by all means spray with that first. You should read 3500 to 4700 ohms, or 3.5 to 4.7K ohms STEADY....while flexing the wires from end to end. If you get any fluctuations, they are bad...IE breaking up inside, turning to a high resistance powder of metal and rubber. I have seen bad plug wires cause problems with idle and low speed only, mid range only, and high speed only, and every combination thereof. Very strange !!!

I dont' know what wires to test to check for .078 to .106 ohms and when testing the plug wires, you can get to the spark plug end easily but what about the other end since its molded into the coil?
