Hopefully someone has run into this problem before.
I took the Ultra out of storage, summerized (new plugs, oil change, pump bearing oil change, new gas, seafoam, etc), and cruised leisurely for about an hour with no problems. When I asked for full power, however, the engine bogged down (like a gas trimmer with choke on). I could not get past the 50% boost mark, +/-5500 rpm. I took it home and everything checked out fine, so I put it on the hose and gave it the old-fashioned Italian tune-up. The engine kinda hesitated when reaching the halfway point, then belched some black soot and then spooled up quickly to the redline. After that it sorta got stuck on high rpm for a second before coming back to idle. It kept on revving happily all the way thereafter, so I took it to the creek this morning and it ran normally, no problems whatsoever.
My concern is I suspect the engine was starved for air due to a bad supercharger. Although I see no corrosion, I think it possible the pulley bearings or the SC vanes are going bad, not turning freely, thus not delivering enough air and causing an overly rich mix. Out of the water, with no load on, it was able to rev up all the way and "break free" of whatever was jamming it, but I fear the problem will return in time. Before I tear into the SC, however, I wanted to see if anyone else has had this problem and what the reason was.
