You Don't Need The 550 Couplers, I Kept The 550 One On The Driveshaft And The 650 One On The Motor, Works Fine In The 440/550 Format, Actually Moves The Motor Back Or Forward A Little, I Forgot Which, Performance Doesn't Suffer, I'll Soon Complete A Sx 650 Top Mated To A 550 Bottom, 650 Powered Of Course...

    Re: HELP!! 650 swap into a 550

If i rember correctly they unscrew. But when you do your conversion your going to have to trim out your 550 pan. They say if you get the right conversion plate you dont have to do this and i have used a few brands now and i have had to do it with them all. The best way for all of it to fit together i have found, and some will argue, is by trimming the pan. I stayed with the 650 coupler welded up the pan ware the pan mounts to the ski, and grinded out ware the conversion plate bolts would hit the pan when the plate is mounted to the motor and then the plate. If you pre fit the motor plate and pan you wll see what im talking about. you can just throw the plate on there without grinding the clearence holes away bu this leads to an umproper fit on the coupler and you will tend to go through the little ruber coupler dampener about once a summer. also the stock 650 moors have a crankcase drain that you will either need to remover and plug up with a plate kit or cut a hole in the pan for it to clear. I left mine and cut a hole in the pan at abbout 1 1/2" in diamiter. Now afoer all this is done and the holes are welded up ware the pan mounts to the ski you will need to trim out the lip ware the batt is locatded at the rear of the motor.. mesure the holes and drill new ones. make sure to mesure the motor and use an extendable mirror to ensure that the couplers are meeting up evenly and strait. They i took off the oil injection to the 650 motor and baught a block off plate. You ca buy em on this website or e bay. the motor now will clear the gasstank and you ave a little mote room for that 650 exhast to squees in there. I stayed with the 550 water box and the 550 e box. Wiring diagrams are on this website that best explain how to rewire the motor into the hull. Also another problem you going to run into is that the throttle cable is going to be a little to short if you running a stock ( not a double carb)
setup. You can have one made from a local cable making shop for under $50. Also i would reccomond going to a 17 degree prop and a top loader intake to boost low end and decrees cavitation in the pump. some mods you should look into is a aluminum CHARGING flywheel highcompression dual cooling head aftermarket pipe and intake. And mabey a little port matching. Do all the, wich is allot of work so prepaired to be dedicated and take your time, and you will have a pretty kick *** ski im on my third one now and there fun. And if you want to take it evean further bluprint the pump and move upto a 750 big pin motor using everything i have stated here!!!!

Ran with that chopped up aluminum prop? That's pretty much a waste of time. I understand wanting to go for a run but that's like running down the 1/4 mile with the parking brake on.

ive seen it done... but you are much safer using a 650 cdi ..... and in all my tests... the 440 or 550 ignition coil has an electrical impedence not matching that of a 650. therefore no spark...

i can get you the wiring diagram i got from jet world powersports from the owner.... didnt seem to help me much.

but if you need a plate or help with a plate i got those!

the 550 was 39 hp, the 440 was 27, and the 300 was 30. as far as i know.
the 300 cant beat a 440. the 300 makes all its power at peak RPM, whereas the lower revving 440 has more torque at a lower RPM.

very well put... same goes for a 550 rpm at bottom and top end vs. a 650.... the rpms are much higher... yet the engine on a 650 is much bigger and will go faster because it has more power...

remember that not always does rpm = power... i can get a tiny electric motor to pump out 60k rpms... and still yet get another the same size... to push out low rpm but much more strength and torque ... but it will not be able to spin very fast.
