Half moon bay and Santa cruz Designated areas?

So does anyone actually ride here? I would be down, the zone 1 in half moon bay is a really nice area.

    http://montereybay.noaa.gov/resource...tml#mpwc_faq08

now if you read carefully it states this :

What is the sanctuary's policy on the use of skis for surf rescue at Mavericks?

Providing consistent and effective surf rescue services at Mavericks is a public safety issue that requires planning and implementation by trained and coordinated public safety rescue professionals working within an emergency management system. NOAA regulations have always supported the use of MPWC by public safety agencies for surf rescue and patrol anywhere in the sanctuary and at any time of the year. Any government agency responsible for public safety at Mavericks is free to recruit, train, certify and supervise others (including volunteers) to assist the agency in surf rescue functions as it deems necessary.

    And then states THIS :

What are the NOAA restrictions for recreational use of skis at Mavericks?

Recreational use of MPWC at Mavericks is allowed only when High Surf Warnings are in effect for San Mateo County from December through February. For more detailed information, maps, and downloads, go to "MBNMS Regulations for MPWC at Zone 5 (Mavericks)".

By RECREATION they mean normal pwc users like us, RIGHT? here is a very detailed map of zone 1 & 5, if im translating this correctly zone 1 is totally legal year round for all pwc.

I think santa cruz (zone 2) and half moon bay (zone 1) would be sweet! I surf both spots regularly and youll be seeing whales, otters, sea lions and ive even seen dolphins, its amazing! People need to use these areas and make a positive pwc appearance...mabye theyll let us use more eventually..

    Zone #2
Ok so good news. Did some research this weekend, had some great feedback. First I went to Santa Cruz and talked the the harbormaster, he said the zone is about a mile out from the harbor mouth and is a 5 square mile zone for pwc. Seems pretty sweet! The weather is Definatly sweet in Santa cruz.

    Zone#1
Then I went up to half moon bay and talked to the harbormaster, he said right outside of the harbor mouth is the pwc zone, its a little more then a square mile and the farthest buoy west is really close to the beach, you wont see any breaking waves but there is rolling waves on tap. He also said that as long as I stay a ways out in and "around" the area ill be fine, he seemed real relaxed about it as long as u don't go near the beach. I was at the jetty with binoculars checking out the buoys and I was suprised how close this designated zone was to shore! And legal! There is also a rock reef out there that causes waves to break about 1/8th mile out (in the pwc zone) and they would be sweet to play in!!

Zone 5 (aka mavericks) is open only during winter on high surf advisory days and that is for rescue and spectators only

That designated area is probably a jetskiers bait trap. A giant kelp bed trap to suck in your intake, then you got to get in the cold water to clear it while the great white lurking below has an easy ready made meal. Jetskiers ride out but don't return.lol. Created by our enviro greenies friends.lol. Anyways, for surf riding go to Pismo the last weekend of Oct for the JK freeride event.

Yes I will be at the pismo free ride lol. I've paddle boarded and surfed the area for years. There is kelp but it's not nearly as bad as the deltas Brazilian water weed. I want to try it for myself and be the judge of how it is. It seems like many people are bitter still that they banned jetskis and made these zones. I dont wanna knock it till i try it. As far as cold water, you have to wear a wetsuit!! I've surfed year round in a 4/3. You can check the buoy for steepness of waves. Which will tell you how nice the rollers will be.
