800 SXi Pro Build.. with Victor Sheldon's PV ski as inspiration

This is more of a place for me to store my set up info more than anything else. A quick makeover and power plant swap for a 1998 SXi Pro. As with all my builds, I'm sticking to the principle of working smarter not harder. My primary reference is Victor Sheldon's power valve ski from the late 90s. In the April 1999 PWI there is an article that details the ski. I'll scan and post up that article soon. Basically I want to use old school tricks to get the most out of this hull.

I've spent a good amount of time on the major Kawasaki stand ups and I prefer the Pro hull for anything after my 550/750. It is an excellent carving hull stock, and a great ski to learn how to tip Kawis on their side and really learn how to lean. I think the ski has exceptional value for the money too. Typically good ones go for 2 grand or so. Figure nice Superjet SN money for something, in my opinion, that looks and feels way more modern than a SN. (And, my next ski is going to be one). Riding a pro to sxr back to back, I really prefer the ergonomics of the pro, it is more comfortable to board and ride. It doesn't feel nearly as big, something which is important considering I really like 550s. Its not as effortless as the sxr, but it challenges you, not unlike the 550. I feel with a little work it will be a really unique cool ski, with a retro vibe that's different, and that's what I like. Performance wise, I'm going to use my brothers current full limited sxr as a benchmark, as well as the same ski once he swaps it over to an 1100 next year. My tentative goal is 60mph on pump gas with 820ccs and a wet pipe.

    Here's my build list:

    1998 SXi Pro

    3DR carbon fiber hood
    AC Pole
    Blowsion bars
OEM Kawasaki STX start-stop and finger throttle, black
Jettrim pads, tray mat, and handlepole chin pad
    TBM race bumpers
    Black anodized fittings
750 gph auto bilge with switch
Skat Trak Stainless Steel Intake Grate, or Jet Dynamics Intake Grate
R Pot carbon fiber ride plate, Bullett carbon fiber ride plate, or Jet Dynamics

    2007 SXR 820cc, superstock ported
    stock cases
    stock crank
    Novi 48s
    VForce 3 reeds
    Advent T3
NYNJA C4 wet pipe or Speedwerx dry pipe
    port matched factory pipe manifold
port matched factory pipe head pipe

stock pump (eventually Solas Mag pump with drop nozzle)
    14-19 C-75 big hub swirl (15-20)

That should do it for now. Before and after pics to start. For those who have seen these please bear with me.

Also on the $$ side I got this ski for $2150 off ebay. It was in great shape and the second owner didn't use it at all in the four years he had it! Just look at that engine!

I immediately sold a few parts off it, the Rend ride plate (which was meant for a sx, not a pro), the oem start stop, the oem bars and finger throttle, and a few other items.

I ran the ski stock all summer and it it was fun but slow that way. I've got two other pros in my riding group, both with limited pipes, and man this was a dog. But it was easy to learn on. It was by far the most friendly ski for the ladies we had out. My girlfriend really likes it, and a bunch of others had it as their first stand up ski.

Oh and because its cool, here's a shot of my Jettrim chin pad, which hasn't gone on yet.

Re: 800 SXi Pro Build.. with Victor Sheldon's PV ski as inspiration

First and foremost, I agree with you that the SXI Pro can be the best ski for laying over a carve that has ever been made. But, unless your goal is a pure freestyle ski (not what I read with a goal of 60mph) there are two handling components that should be mandatory to your build: hull extensions and small front sponsons. They are the key to making a very good ski a great ski. I have previously owned an SX, a SXI Pro and an SXR, and I can tell you that the improvements to the SXI Pro in minimizing porpoising, improving stability at speed AND improving carving hold and feel shouldn't be underestimated. For front sponsons, it isn't necessary to go to full-on tubbies, the ones I had were designed and installed by the factory Kawasaki team at the end of 2002 and were replicas of their race skis. They were less than an inch thick and really were a noticeable help with stability and carving. Unfortunately, I can't post pictures as my ski was sunk & lost in 15' surf off of Oceanside a few years ago (a sad day). Search for pics of the 2002 Kawi team race skis, you won't find better ones than those.
