    JS440 won't start (I've searched a lot already, promise! :)

So I recently bought a 1981 JS440. It has a westcoast pipe, supertrapp muffler, 20cc head (i think its stock and has been shaved and is stamped w/20cc and the shop name), aftermarket flywheel (dont remember the brand at the moment), round body carb (BN38 ???), westcoast exhaust manifold.

Things I have done so far:

    Cleaned fuel tank
    Replaced all fuel lines
    New spark plugs
    New fuel filter
    Checked "check" valve
    Verified spark on both plugs
Checked compression with questionable autoparts store loaner ~120psi on both jugs
    Replaced head gasket
Checked pistons, rings, and jugs - all look good
Reset timing to stock (index mark aligned with flat spot on case)
Cleaned carb (looked spotless inside and no damage at all)
    New, fully charged battery
Visually checked stator - all looks good, no bad wires that I can see
Disconnected and verified correct operation of kill switch w/ DMM
Inspected everything inside elec box - no visual damage, and everything looked new

The ski has "coughed" twice on two separate days but that's all I have been able to get out of it. I've tried both premix and starting fluid in both the carb and directly in the plug holes - nothing.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I'm getting close to slapping this back on CL and trying to get what I have in it back.

    Thanks!

You may want to unscrew the spark plug caps from the wires and trim the wires about 1/4" back to get to fresh center conductor. Then screw plug caps back onto wires. It's possible you have weak spark.

So you've got fuel, spark, and compression? That's all you need. Have you verified that the flywheel key is not sheared?

x2 on trimming the spark plug caps. It can show spark, but doesn't have enough juice to withstand the firing process. Happened to one cylinder on me.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I did the quick leakdown test and found that my base gasket was leaking, so I fixed that wnd got it to start. I am still going to trim the plug wires just to make sure I'm getting the best spark possible. It doesn't start consistently, but at least I got it started several times. Thanks again!
