The fuel bowl is not the selector. The "selector" is the valve with the knob and bezel with ON, OFF, RES written on it. What you have pictured is the fuel/water seperator bowl.
An oring like the one pictured will allow air to be sucked into the fuel line, replacing fuel that should be in there going to the carbureators.
