    Re: "Angry Cardinal" 550/750 build

Ha! That's great Mike. I'll have to start dropping my jets. Gonna do that after I dial in the impeller a bit more.

Oh another note, due to some substantial cracks Pretty Red is coming entirely apart and I'm looking for a hull replacement. Hopefully things work out with JSNate and I'm able to get a nice 83 that he has. I'm going to go over the top vintage on that one.

But before we discuss that, last time out I made some good changes. Got in a full day of riding Fourth of July Saturday and had a whole bunch of friends ride it. PR just ripped and ripped. Only issue was owner error in not filling the ski up with gas at the end of the day, lol! 7/2 we did some GPS runs. Best I did with the 11/17 hooker and a 76mm nozzle was 56.3. Not too bad, but I know there's a lot more. Going down in nozzle from 80 to 76 actually gave the ski a decent amount more low to mid. I definitely need a steeper impeller. I did PR back to back with my brother's sxi pro. Basically identical spec engine with a factory pipe and a 14/19 c75 impeller. That ski still had more low end punch, where as Pretty Red was somewhat soft. I think it has to do with how much grab the impeller has.

This requires a little discussion. We noticed with Kurt's (BLRider's) conversion with the 700cc PJS RIC engine that it doesn't pull impellers in the same way as my stock 750 did. My stock 750 had more low end with a 10/16 hooker. His engine had a powerband that hit higher, but it also had more power in general. I think it needed more grab, going steeper on the impeller, vs lower. Same with where I'm at with the ported 800.

It is becoming increasing apparent to me that these conversion skis just don't cavitate. They have too much thrust and not enough weight and hull drag. The lower pitch impellers seem more like a manual car that's slipping its clutch, or an auto with a torque converter that has more mush. Basically the result is just a super smooth delivery of power, that's the best I can describe it. As I have progressively increased pitch from 10/16, to 11/17 and then 76mm nozzle, the low end punch on PR has progressively increased. Super counter intuitive. Once things are set with my hull, I am going to try a 14/19 c75 swirl and a 15/20. At that point I will probably look into a pump stuffer as well. It's clear that the RPM need to drop a ton. Based on what I'm seeing with the speeds, I think it's my advent's 7700 rpm limiter that's kicking in now.

On another note, a friend brought out his 2017 sxr. He's still breaking it in, so he was somewhat leery of letting others ride it. But he was progressively opening it up. When I was doing some practice speed runs he was right there beside me. I know he was keeping some in reserve, but we were both kind of surprised how well PR did by comparison! Once it gets hooked up this beast can really lay down some serious mid range acceleration.

Bumping this up for some guys from FB to find and reference easier.

@jetbum, I'm in process. Covid quarantining has killed my momentum because the skis aren't with me where I live at the city. I have been planning things out though and buying parts. Right now its taking a back seat to my 1100 SJ build and some Wavejammer updates.

Right now what I am currently doing with the 83 is tracing the decals. They are too perfect, I can't miss this opportunity to digitize them before its stripped for paint. This is going to be a resto mod type ski again like Pretty Red was. Eventually with silver and black carbon accent graphics in the 83 550 style.
