DIY Floating Dock Ramp: Progress Thread

A few months ago I stumbled upon this thread at x-h2o where someone built a floating dock ramp for his stand up (below):

My dad has a slip at the local marina for his boat that opens into the slough and delta where I ride, so I decided to build something similar to keep my SXR down there over the summer. I picked up a bunch of 5 gallon jugs that the fire department was going to recycle and built a frame out of treated 2x8s to house them. On top, I've used 2x4s and decking plank for the bunks and some 2x6 for the ramp leading up to them. I had a friend weld a steel plate to a square rod to mount a winch on. The end of the ramp is going to be hinged to the existing dock, and we're going to build a deck across the corner of the existing dock to put a dock box on and hide the hinges from view. 15 jugs x 20 litres gives 300 kg's of float at full submersion, which is over 600 lbs, so if the SXR is 300 lbs and the frame is about 150 the barrels should be submerged about 3/4s of the way when the jet ski is loaded up. I'll update the thread with progress, today we picked up the lumber and built the frame, hopefully will be dropping it in the water tomorrow and bolting up the hinges.

    May 23rd:

The ramp is going to sit along the dock in front of the boat:

Hey that was me! It's still there too right now. The only problem I ever had was it rocking side to side so if your mounts good to the dock or sea wall you should be good. Keep the pics coming

Haha cool, good to hear it's still holding up Didn't you end up hooking an air line to the barrel to lift/lower the ramp? I figured it might be a bit tippy so I went with lots of small jugs and a wider frame, going to secure it to the dock with some heavy duty hinges and lag bolts to hopefully prevent swaying.

Lol, the lady in the back is my mom shaking her head at us, thinking "what the hell crazy project are these two doing now"

yup, I did. I dont have any pics of it setup like that. but all I did is drill some holes in the bottom of the barrel, and run a valve to my pump for my airdock. It works pretty good and makes it a bit easier to load. I have to keep it all the way out of the water since its in salt, and if anything stays in there to long, it will be covered in barnacles

    Bolting on the hinges:

    And it floats!

Next on the list, bolt up the winch and build the deck for the dock box (will be going diagonally across the corner)

Just a question, how come no carpet on the bunks?

Also what type of carpet will be durable yet not mark the bottom of the hull? I have a couch and a drive up ramp I use p-edging on and was looking for something with less friction.

I'm going to add carpet to the bunks and the 2x6s at the back, forgot to mention that. There's a place that manufactures trailers around here, going to see if I can get some trailer carpet from them, I'm hoping they'll have some scrap clippings I can take for free.
