    650SX - What year? Ebox/Coil question...

Ok, I think the hull and HIN on my ski don't match. Both HINs show 88, but someone wrote in black marker in the inside of the engine compartment "1990".
I'm hoping to solve this by checking the "dental records".

On the e-box, I have a 4 wire coil. Blue, black/red, black/yellow, and solid black, with no CDI.
I have a spare coil from an X2 that I used to compare and it only has 3 wires.

So, I'm hoping someone can identify what year or year range this ebox/coil is from, so that I can post a WTB for a replacement (no spark, and stator gives pulses on a test light at regulator).

If you have other suggestions for troubleshooting, please let me know.
    Thanks!

Interesting, it has a black top. Ok, stronger case for 1990.
But, I do still need to know what year the ebox/coil is from so I can get one as replacement.
    Any ideas?

If the spark plug wires are like those js kinda(smaller diameter wires ) then its the early s but if it has those fatter one then its the 90's

    Does it have rear exhaust?

You should ohm the coil wires from the stator before you replace the CDI/coil pack. The stator coils will produce current even when they are failing.

You could be replacing the wrong part.

    It's a left exhaust.

I'll try the ohm test. Do you know the baseline? What should it read?

Am I looking for something different from a 0 ohm reading?

Yes, 0 ohms is an open circuit (broken wire) Seloc manuals have the readings in them as I am sure others do too. I'll look when I find my manual.

    Re: 650SX - What year? Ebox/Coil question...

I pin-pointed the problem! The coil is bad!
I was able to "hot wire" my 3 wire spare coil into the 4 wire system and it gave good spark!
*Thank God... I was dreading pulling the flywheel to get to the stator.*
Unfortunately I can't use the spare coil permanently... the plug wires are even length and too short (from X2?).

So... anyone have a good 650sx 4 lead coil for sale?
I'll post in the WTB section too.

    Thanks all!
