    Jetski Title Issue

Not sure if this is the correct area to post, but before I consult my attorney, I thought I would post here and get some responses.

    Heres the story:

Purchased a Jetski last fall from someone on the boards here. I was told there is no Title card. Without thinking (yes, my fault, I take total responsibility for purchasing this jetski. I was not thinking or knew where to look on the registration)

So I purchased the jetski. I just took the registration to the DMV to register it in my name. Turns out there IS a title on it and it is still registered to the original owner and was never registered to the person I purchased it from.

I contacted the original owner and talked to him once. I now cannot get ahold of him and am taking it that he wants nothing to do with getting this thing out of his name. He also has not responded to me about if he has a copy of the title or not. The person I bought it from is also non responsive.

I do have a bill of sale with his name, address, signature, the works.

The DMV said my only option is to go to small claims court which i will probably have to do.

    Question:

How do I go about this? How SHOULD i go about this? and is there an end in site? Its ALMOST jetski season and I want this thing on the lake ASAP.

Any help, feedback, suggestions are appreciated.

This topic is beaten to death, and (as you agreed) problem #1 was buying it without a title.

However, you have a slightly unique case, in that you have contacted the original "owner" (who appears to be the legal owner/title holder).

Contact owner/title holder and tell them that you are going to be riding the ski all summer, but leaving it in his name.

Since he is the title holder, he will be potentially liable for any damage caused by the ski.

Or, would he like help in getting it out of his name. (Easy, he applies for lost title ($12 last time I did it) and then signs it to you).

Spin...In MN we dont need a title to register a ski. It is good though that you got it...it makes it easier to sell out of state.

In MN if you have the last reg. owners name all you need to do is produce a bill of sale in the owners name and you can transfer registration.

I suggest using the Wayzata DMV....they are the most lax office you have ever delt with.

That is not correct. If the jetski has a title, you have to produce that title to the DMV (even Wayzata) to register it in your name and a new title will be issued to you.

    Re: Jetski Title Issue

I think the confusion here is that only some PWCs in MN have a title. Since it costs extra to title a PWC, it's usually only done if there the PWC was used for collateral and the bank wanted to put a security interest on the title. Always check the registration card. It will state Title: Yes or No.

The other issue I see all the time is trailers. With the lifetime stickers on them a lot of people don't bother to transfer the titles on them. They are passed from person to person without a title and then you have no way to get the title in your name.
    Current PWC: SeaDoo GTX 4-tec
Past PWCs: Yamaha GP760, Polaris SLT750, 2 Yamaha WR500 WaveRunners
