Re: WTF Wisconson , Protesting, this ain't Egypt !

They are not being "asked" to pay they are being told to pay.
Well, then I guess the democrats currently hiding out of state should get their behinds home and make their voices heard. You know, maybe they should be doing the jobs that the citizens of Wisconsin elected them to do instead of hiding and playing politics.

Funny, but I don't seem to recall former Gov. Doyle holding too many listening sessions when it came to forcing ethanol down our throats, or giving raises to those who elected him, or adding more and more citizens to the Badgercare system, or passing the dual-accounting crap that drove business out of our state. I guess he figured since passing those things were essentially slam-dunks anyhow, it didn't matter much who got asked, told, or whatever. He had the desire and the votes to do those things, so he did them. Yes, elections can prove to be very critical at times.

Oh, and I do have empathy for the gov't employees affected by this. As an employee, I've had my employer make changes to my health care AND my 401k plan - and guess what? My employer made decisions regarding those things and my opinion really didn't mean squat, so I know EXACTLY what these state workers are feeling right now. However, I honestly didn't get mad at my employer when those changes/decisions were made. You know why? Because I understood that those changes were necessary for the business to stay in business and for me to continue having a job. BTW, I currently have NO employer sponsored pension plan and NO employer sponsored health insurance, and I also know that my wage is less than some teachers and more than some teachers - and I've been doing my same basic job for 19 years, so overall, I'd still say teachers, as a whole, have things pretty good - since I think I have things pretty good. After all, there are lots of people worse off than me, and there are lots of people worse off than your average public school teacher.

Anyhow, I guess when you've been accustomed to having things a certain way for a long time (aka, basically forever in the current case here in WI), it can be very hard to suddenly be forced to accept a new reality. I get that. However, when you're being asked to accept a new reality that is still equal to or better than the taxpayers who fund your standard of living, then you really need to take that into account and keep things in perspective - or you're gonna appear to be rather unreasonable to others.

For the record, I think it's the heads of the unions that are MUCH more bothered by Walker's proposals than the majority of the union members themselves. In fact, the company I currently work for was founded by an MPS teacher, on his MPS salary and his MPS pension plan. I highly doubt most other private sector workers could manage to work 9 months a year as a teacher for 20-25 years and wind up owning a place like www.poolsideinfo.com while still retiring at the age of 65. Not that he hasn't worked his a s s off or doesn't deserve his success, but to ignore where some of the opportunity for success came from would be disingenuous. Just sayin...

One thing to keep in mind for those curious is teachers salaries are public record, and are available on most school districts web sites. Not the averages, but the actual teachers pay and benefits.

Public employees should never be unionized. Never. Especially fire or police. The Governor should do what President Reagan did with the air traffic controllers......get back to work or or be fired.

I agree with that part in bold. However, they currently are unionized so hence the fuss. I also agree that they should go back to work and I'm sure that most will. They are teachers and most teachers do care.

The part that bothers me right nowt is that the Teachers unions get slammed while Police and Fire do not. You can go ahead and say it is just a matter of time but that means nothing right now. It indicates preferential treatment.

Did someone say Ethanol?? Boy, wait til you here about that scandal....it will be biblical.
    But, back to the current issue;
Is this the beginning of the end of Unions???
Like most of you, I've just followed this on the news, but it peaked my interest. Especially when they "speculated" that some of the "protesters" were being bused in from out of state. Now where have I heard of that happening before?? Oh, wait..I know...it was Arizona!!! And the buses were paid for by the OPEIU....a Union. Wow, what a surprise!!

So now, you have 14 Democratic Senators who are in violation of state law, and are basically AWOL. Nice. Hope the voters are taking names.......

I'll defer my opinion to those that actually live in Wisconsin and are the most directly affected by what is going on.
However, I stand by Tommygunner, and mirror his statement that their should be no Public Employee Unions!!! Those jobs should go out for "bid", just like other contracts that the public enters into for other things that local governments need.
And, I also ask; why the teachers??

Our country is being held "hostage" by labor unions. They, and their "pension plans" are completely unsustainable, and will eventually bankrupt the States, and then the Federal Government.
Sorry if you are now currently in a Union, and not close to retirement. You're basically screwed. It's all a giant Ponzi scheme, and if you believe you will see anything vaguely resembling a pension when you get ready to retire, you are delusional.

Life, in the United States, is going to get "interesting" in the next two years....

It sure as heck does, and I don't like that either. Our last gov was pretty darn adept at producing preferential treatment as well, and I didn't like that either - 'cept that was in a different direction .

No doubt, and damn you for saying so . Guess me and my boys will just have to continue spending all my hard earned money at Rush concerts instead of Foo Fighters - and hopefully Geddy Lee will keep his big trap shut, or else the trees will be kept equal by hatchet, axe, and saw!!

This is one of the best opinions I have read in a long time....completely agree. Back in my phone and data wiring days I got to deal with both sides of unions. They just plain suck...period.

Seems like we are headed into some kind of fork in the road; the US will turn into some kind of pseudo Europe or Canada, with much more gov. involvement in all facets of our lives, whether you want it or not(actually that's kind of how it is now...), or this movement gets stopped cold, people adjust to the global economy, and start being self sufficient again. I'm not sure how feasible that is with free trade forcing us to compete with people that will do our jobs for scraps of food, but I don't have a problem with tariffs. For all I care, luxuries can go through the roof. I don't need a new iphone every six months with an umlimited data plan, flat screen tv's, new V8 car every 2 years, ipod, xbox, etc....
I thought about how much my grandparents spent on luxuries when they were around, and my god, no wonder people are broke.
