starter works great but won't spin the flywheel

    1990 superjet - all stock
I have removed the starter motor and she spins over freely but there isn't any hook-up when installed and given power... what is going on? Possibly the bendix? Usually they are connected to the end of the starter but not here? Need to know the next plan of action and any tips along the way. Thanks a bunch guys

The bendix is not connected to the starter on these things. The bendix is under the timing cover.

Can you turn the motor over by hand ?
Does the starter turn the motor over when the plugs are out ?
What happens when you hit the magic green button ? Do you hear the starter spinning or is it all quiet ?

You will probably find the bendix is rusty and needing replacement.

Yep I can turn the motor over by hand as I have already taken off the head to have it milled (since this occured unfortunately). I have NOT turned it over by hand with the starter motor installed though. When I hit the greenie the starter spins over beautifully (installed AND holding in my hand).
Pretty sure problem is just in front of the starter (terrible design, why?) I'm guessing that I'll have to go in through the flywheel? Is it easier to pull the motor or just the tank to work on her?
    thanks guys

Why is it a bad design?
You'll need to take the flywheel cover off and remove the flywheel.
    The bendix likely needs replacement.

Re: starter works great but won't spin the flywheel

So I opened her up tonight and the bendix isn't as bad as I thought. I worked it by hand a couple times and it seemed to be fine so I reinstalled it and the starter (minus the flywheel) and gave them some juice and she worked great. Slid right forward as she should. Since only slight rust was starting to form I sanded it off and I'm letting her soak in mineral spirits overnight. Next is a bath in oil and then grease in the right areas and I'm gonna try it for now. I do need to replace the O-ring on the starter motor bc thats how I think water got in. Its only a matter of time before it gets stuck again. Hey PoM... how much for the bendix? zip code 32606 What years/models have this bendix gear for my 90 SJ anyways? Hey custom, is the only way to get that compression with an aftermarket head due to stock piston clearance so low that you cant mill the head much? thanks to all

no you can mill the head. but yamaha has a common problem of cracking the cylinder on the intake side. so if your planning on doing mods reccomend a girdled head.
