    VTS Problems (of course)

    - I have a two 96 XP's, Neither VTS works.
    - One of the motors looks good (its shiny and pretty) the other one is a little coroded.
    - I want to try and trouble shoot them tonight and figure out if its the motor or module or wiring.
    - I have two skis so I can swap parts to test things.
    - Currently nothing happens when I push the buttons.
    - I have tools and a multi-meter for testing
    - Where should I start to figure out where the problem is?

Thanks ahead of time for the help
Sorry if ask alot of questions, I am trying to learn

    Re: VTS Problems (of course)

Id start out by pulling the motors and bench testing them. Hook the motor leads directly up the the "+" and "-" of your battery and see if the motor turns. Then switch the leads and see if it turns the other way. Im dealing with a similar issue.

      Re: VTS Problems (of course)

Its likely the actual VTS module; do the test mentioned above to make sure. You can also open the back e-box and check the fuse, but you will prob find if your replace it it will just blow again.

These things were made to fail...total BS if you ask me. Most people just set it manually to the middle and forget about it. I put manual trim setups on both of mine. The cable ones fetch about $125, hydro ones about $200.

Ok I hard wired the motors on both, One worked and One didn't. What should I do if I want to use this relay system to bypass it?

find a junk outboard ,get the trim relay setup and wire that in , works great its cheep { the gauge wont work } but the trim will

the ones on OMC outboards are small and work well and have there own little box

Is that something I can do? I thought I had to add some type of relay?

Why not just put in a new module and this time put the updated clamps on a new boot so you don't get water in it again? Once you update it and keep moisture out, those things will last a really long time!

Yeah that would be the correct fix, but that's like $150 bucks. I thought someone said the relay fix is cheap like 5 or 6 bucks

I got one for $10 from Amazon.com shipped. It works great. I definitely suggest it.
