    Re: Racing Practice Buoys!?!

Toys-R-Us or almost any toy store, wal-mart, etc. I use a keychain caribeener to go around the hippity hop handle, then tie the rope to that, make the rope 25 - 50 - 75 feet, whatever you need. Wrap the rope around a 5lb dumbell, and you are set. When you drop the dumbell, it will uwrap to the perfect length cause it stops when it hits bottom, and it stays in place. I usually take the hippity hops to the lake deflated and blow them up with a 12 volt mattress pump plugged into the lighter outlet.

Anyone here from Cali that has dropped any of these in the water. I"m just wondering what Law enforcement thinks about them since they could probably be considered navigational, and thus not legal.

Its depends on DNR rules and how big of di46's the officers are. We got shut down in Indiana for the Memorial ride (after a storm and there was NO ONE one the water but us), but the sheriff didnt care at our sortie in MN.

would something as simple and cheap as balloons and a weight work?

I wouldn't use bricks since they can very easily tear up and scratch a ski when you are setting up buoys. Instead make a weight like this.
Get some rope, 3" pvc pipe with end caps., and concrete
Cut a 12" piece of pipe for each buoy and fill with concrete
This is only 2" pvc in the pic. I kind of regret not going to 3" cause the buoys will sometimes move on a windy day.

    Nice pic John!

Yes Hippity Hops make the best track bouys. They used to be available in Red, Yellow and Blue also. Just a note, don't over inflate them, as a matter of fact just inflate them enough so that they retain their sphereical shape, they don't need to be inflated to the point where you can bounce on them as they where intended. When they have low air pressure they with stand getting hit by skis much better. When they're full of air they can pop easily.

All good ideas. Another source is Overton's--- they have 4 types of inflatable buoys from 8" to 20" diameter in different colors--- all of them say they can be used to mark off a ski or pwc course--prices range from $7 to $20
