Re: Canyon Lake vs Sam Rayburn for Labor Day 2009
Lake Sam Rayburn is fantastic for PWC and boating. It's big and it's deep. Don't know much about the north end of the lake but the only place you'll find stumps on the south end are along some of the inlets. Put in at Twin Dikes and you'll be fine. Depths of the lake are around 60' in most places. It's a beautiful lake. As for places to stay, try to rent a condo at Rayburn Country. Rayburn Country Motel is a dump (cheap, but a dump). The only other place is the Bass Buster Inn. Never stayed there but I'm told it's fine. For dining, go to The Stump and eat a chicken fried steak.
Rayburn is not crowded and hardly developed. You won't find houses and docks lining the shore line as that is prohibited. Most of the land surrounding the lake is owned by the government. In fact, the Corp Of Engineers own the first 200' of all of the shore line.
As far as hangouts on the lake, the prominent places are Rattlesnake Island (just off the ramps at Twin Dikes). Ebnezer Park (just past the dam), and Westwood (about 2 miles north of the dam). Nightlife is pretty much limited to The Stump.
Hopes this helps. If you need anymore info, just shout.
