    How do I change a 550 sx stator?

    1991, are there any topics already posted on this? Please direct me if there are. Anyone have any good info? Know nothing except that it needs one. Thank you.

    It's on the front of the engine. Remove the gas tank, unbolt the flywheel cover, remove the flywheel. There will be wires from the stator you will need to follow to the back of the ski and unplug.

    You will need a flywheel removal tool and holding tool to remove the flywheel. Hold the flywheel, loosen the 22mm(?) nut (first place a mark across the nut and the end of the crank with a Sharpie for reference when you put the nut back on; an air wrench is helpful, the spec torque is 120 lbs.), attach the removal tool to the flywheel, hold the flywheel, and crank it off. Some will hold the flywheel by putting a rope down into the front cylinder so that it keeps the crank from turning (I prefer the tool).

    *dumb question* So I'm assuming I have to pull the motor out to do this...? Also what are the symptoms of a bad stator so I can be sure thats what it needs...? Thank you for your help.

    I find it better to leave the engine in the hull to hold it stationary when you crank off/on the flywheel nut. There is no need to remove the engine.
    There is a cranking voltage test and a resistance test that can be done on the stator. How to and the specs for the tests are in the repair manual. I will try to copy the info and post it if you don't have the manual.

    resistance readings for the coils on the stator, can be checked at the cap on the elec. box., unplug connector check with a ohm meter.
    i would do this first before pulling it.

    Exciter Coil Red (or purple) & Black 112-168 ohms +/- 20%

    Pulser Coil Red (or purple) & Gray (or green) 14.4-21.6 ohmsPulser +/-20%

    Charge coil - Green (or lt brn) ----- Green (or lt brn) - 3ohms +/- 20%

    Green (or lt brn)-----Black - 1.5ohms +/- 20%

    There is also a cranking voltage test. Test the voltage between the grey wire and black ground while cranking the starter and also the red wire and ground in the same manner. Only problem is I do not know what the measurement should be. Maybe someone here on the forum can help with that, or call John at Jet Ski Solutions (678-255-5055).

    any tips on how to get the flywheel off all i ahve left right now is the flywheel crank and crankcase i cant get this thing off

    take the nut off. put a fly wheel puller on. tighten it very tight(i use impact gun to do it) then smack the fly wheel puller with a hammer if need be. should POP right off.
