Hello, I recently purchased a 1994 zodiac projet with a bad motor. It has the 650 yamaha motor in it and I believe it has the waverunner III drivetrain. I have read some prior posts and understand that the 650 motor can be swapped out for a 701 in some yamaha waverunners. I have read that I can rejet the carb of the 650 but I'm curious if the flywheel stator assembly and electronics from my 650 will work on the 701. Any information you could share on the compatibliltiy of the 650 and 701 motors and drivetrains would be much appreciated!
Thanks for the reply, do you know if the exhaust is the same for the 650 and 701 motors? I want to make sure that if I use the 650 exhaust with the 701 motor, i don't restrict the flow and limit the HP...
I am swapping in a 701-61X into my VXR, had a single carb 650. The intake manifold, reed assembly, and exhaust manifold are different. You might be able to use the reeds, not sure. I do know the plate that the reeds bolt to and that attaches to the intake manifold is different. That zodiac sounds like a cool ride.
Did you do the swap? I'm thinking about doing the same exact thing to a '93 Projet.
Yes. Bought a SBT engine and dropped it in. The intake manifold, reed assembly, jets in the carb, and exhaust manifold are different. I ran the 650 carb during break-in, but have a carb off a 701 I am going to swap on. The CDI for the 650 has a lower rmp limit, something like 6300 or 6500. The 701 CDI is around 7100, not sure the exact numbers. I stuck with the 650 CDI, have a nephew that likes to run it WOT all the time. A few more beatings and he will learn to use it and not abuse it.
I have not swapped out the motor in my projet yet. still deciding on which motor I want to go with. its a toss up between the 701 62T and 760. I think i'm going to keep my eye open for a doner ski of either one and cannibalize the motor, intake, exhaust, cdi etc. will update this post when i do. no rush however, i dont plan on taking my time and this winter to finish this project.
Did anyone do a motor swap yet? I 'm in the process of installing a 760 64x motor and I am curious which jet pump you guys experimented with and your performance results.
