    New Law for New Jersey

Info from another site Thought you all should also see!

Today I'm reading the Asbury Park Press and I come across an article in the local front section that talks about a new law for pwc use in jersey. This law would ban jetski's from being 200 feet from any shoreline, waterfront home, swimming buoy or just anyone in the water. This law is currently only 50 feet

This law is also only for pwc and not boats.

This could hurt us from even entering the F Cove and Tice's Shoal. This would stop us from being able to wave jump in barnegat also.

I sent a letter to Chris MAthos at the AWA (American Watercraft Association) for some advice and help.

Here's a copy of the letter

    Mr Mathos,
As i was reading my sunday paper, The Asbury Park Press, I came across a disturbing article.

    The Asbury Park Press
    Sunday January 25, 2009
    Local Front Page AA2
    From Staff Reports

"Bill would set rules for "Jet Ski" use"

Personal watercraft riders would have to stay farther from swimmers and shore under a bill proposed by 9th District Legislators.

The measure, sponsored by state Sen. Chrostopher J. Connors and Assemblymen Brian E. Rumpf and Daniel M. Van Pelt, all R-Ocean, would increase the distance personal watercraft must keep from buoys that mark swimming areas, the shoreline, people in the water and waterfront residential units to 200 feet from 50 feet.

The Assembly Law and Public Safety Committee cleared the bill last Thursday. In May, it passed the State Senate by a vote of 38-0. The bill provides for state, county and municipal police to enforce it, but would reserve primary jurisdiction of waterdraft crimes and collisions to the state police."

Mr. Mathos this law could really hurt the New Jersey Shore. Some parts on both the Manasquan River, the Metedeconk River and the Barnegat Bay are tight in certain areas including in lagoons and sounds like this bill would ban personal watercraft from being in the area.

There are multiple areas in the Barnegat Bay and in the Manasquan River that both boats and personal watercraft gather at and it sounds like this law would prohibit it for watercraft.

No where in the law does it talk about boats also only watercraft.

Mr. Mathos I'm asking for both your advice and assistance here to help keep pwc use in New Jersey both enjoyable and equal.

I'm noticing on more threads that new laws are coming out. Unfortunately you'll find that the AWA is useless as well as the PWIA.

Re: New Law for New Jersey

ok, last i saw the bill, it reads "navigate at speed in harbor or within 200 feet of ...." so you would only be expand the no wake zone, and that would also mean the inlets and tice's shoal, but they still cant stop you from embarking or disembarking on a trip to island beach- that would be like banning the use of a motorcycle to go there and park legally. not to mention my favorite hobby, back bay and canal gunkholing, not sure what can be done to keep that legal.... there are already so many places it illegal to beach a PWC. You cant even park and go to ANY of the public bathrooms on LBI !!

*BUT- what you all SHOULD be worried about is the NEW LAW that ALREADY PASSED over a year ago! and it takes effect THIS year, IT BANS -ALL- 2 stroke PWC's from National Parks, and ALLOWS AN OPENING to expand to include MORE bodies of water, and its wording enables ANY federal or state department, ( hmmm - CALIFORNIA ) to basically enforce this on any body of water they want!!-- and use the federal law's wording- so we are suspect to see this sooner or later on other federal bodies of water, as in, army corps of engineers, (Raystown Lake, PA).... as well as in any state lake involving EPA pollution "concerns": hmmm in NY state - lake george, lake champlain, the finger lakes-

---but for some reason, direct injected / ficht 2 strokes are the exception to this new law, and i am told of some kind of "deal" was struck between the EPA and the NMMA to push the watercraft industry into making only 4 stroke / 50 state EPA approved PWCs...AND to halt production of any DI components for PWC's - even though they meet emission standards-- so don't expect a kawasaki 800 DI standup, even though there is already a prototype. You can write to who you want to, but to me, politician is just another 4-letter word.
-now if anyone can clarify if an X2 is wake-zone exempt? at one point, i have an old NJ state boating rule book that reads- "all motorized planing water craft (jet ski's) not capable of operation at idle in a no wake zone, are to be kneeled on and operated safely at a slow planing speed".

It almost sounds like freethinking an common sense in this state an country are going either the way of the dodobird or the turrlit.3/4 quarters of the people arent gonna be able to afford new 4 stroke skis at 16 thousand bucks w no jobs anyways.I dont think kawasaki will be handing these out as bail outs for us.

I am going to LBI in July, sounds like I won't even be able to take my SJ out at all on the island? I had no idea there were such strict ride/beach zones? Anyone have a map of where you can't ride/beach? I was hoping to take my ski out into the surf around one of the inlets or after hours on a more isolated beach.
