Re: New law makes waves for young boaters, jet-skiers

So you need your boaters safety to ride a jet ski but not to drive a 50 ft. Boat.

Re: New law makes waves for young boaters, jet-skiers

    Old thread week....

NH did a graduated implementation of requiring Education and Testing. 7 year increments, over 7 years. Initially, you could test on line. Now need to sit, in person for the test. There is still have a 14 day license for tourists.

About seven years ago, all drivers needed to be licensed. What a difference in added safety !

When one crosses the boarder into Mass., it's like going into a bumper car ride, vs NH's safer drivers.

Problem now, is budget cuts have resulted in selective area enforcement. Resulting in over zealous water cops at some locations, little to no enforcement at others. Resulting in non-licensed "getting away" with it enough, that these spots are leaking back to the no knowledge level.

I have a lake house near an island, that used to be connected to the mainland 60 years ago. The 30 feet of road closest to the inland was dug out, and is marked with the inland sticks as the channel. The other 200 feet has the road, that can be hit once the water level drops a foot.

Past three years of budget cuts has seen more and more drivers cross the road.

Had a kid 15-17 yrs old on a VX driving for two weeks not wearing a pfd last month.

On the Vineyard about ten years ago, parents let their 10 and 12 year olds take the jet ski couch. Killed when they hit rocks at WOT.

There was a guy on the NFL Patriots killed a few years ago on a pwc, not wearing a pfd.

Another guy crossing Salem MA harbor without a pfd in a storm surge died about 4 years ago.

We were out the day after a hurricane a few years ago. 17-20 waves. A dopey salesman from the Honda dealer ship thought it would be a good day to learn how to jetski. He jumped a wave, and landed on the jetty. They towed it off the jetty by quad, the hull bouncing on the rocks, all the way to the beach. Totaled.

Education might get some people to think. It's not a fix all. Think texting while driving.....

But, consider the person on this thread that was happy with their 86% score. It really means you don't know 14% of what could be the difficult or most important parts.

Sort of like the guys that can't figure the inland sticks on my lake.

Have towed a few back to the ramp over the years, as they needed new lower units. Which are $1,400 used, $3,400 new.....

Put limits on the size of craft they can ride, don't penalize the entire population. It's the same with anything, learn the right way to ride and you are fine. I know plenty of adults who are complete idiots on pwc, motorcycles, boats, cars, snowmobiles, etc.

Kawasaki put a throttle limiter on their early 2- stroke skis. the throttle can be governed so the ski can only go 15 or 20 mph... or at 10 you you like. This is how it starts... next 60 dollar Water drivers licenses. mandatory 20, 40,000 insurance. Bi yearly emissions inspection. ( boy.. they will screw up skis trying that ). It never fails. Like gun laws... always passed by people that have no experience on skis, guns, etc. ( usually the frikkin blow boater crowd, skip and muffy )

In Australia it is a full day course for boat and pwc license, $300 and you need to know the rules and show you are confident operating both by the end of the day.

Not sure what you are complaining about. Great way to get these people out of the gene pool.
