    1996 Waveraider 700 - Starter / Idle Gear / Flywheel problems

Last year I had problems with our pwc: when we tried starting it, it would just "whir" and not turn over the engine intermittantly. A few whirs would usually engage. Sometimes it would start right away. Only happened 25% of the time. I assumed starter was bad; bought a new one from SHS powersports.

Took out the starter, then realised it wouldnt have been starter, starter turned, just wasnt engaging, so I figured it was Idle wheel. Pulled out idle wheel, and i cant tell if its worn or what is cuasing it. A friend thought it looked like a newer part, and the seal for the flywheel cover seemed newer too.

We were trying to figure out what was wrong when I saw that my flywheel had 2 wear spots on it. I am guessing the idle gear was wasnt engaging fully so it was just grinding on the flywheel.

Perhaps they had this problem and replaced idle gear and left flywheel. Or who knows, maybe both are bad. I got pics. I know i need to replace flywheel, but I cant tell if idle gear is bad.

    What do you guys think?

Also - if the idler gear/teeth are not worn where it engages the flywheel, how do I tell if there are other issues?

the flywheel wear is a but blurry, i would say a few teeth are at 60% or so

I would guess that the flywheel is toast , but the pics leave a little to the imagination!

think im fine leaving the idle gear as is? Seemed pretty smooth if we spin it out so it engages

    Hehe - i have a small grasp.

    Whats a bendix?

While I am at it, i noticed a bunch of carbon and perhaps a little rust on the plugs when i changed them out. Looking in the cylinder it looked pretty gunky. Should i just burn some sea foam and hope for the best?

Bendix is what you are calling idler gear , can't comment on the plug without more history

Btw thanks - I ordered a Flywheel (and a choke knob, ****ing guest ripped my last one off right before he crashed it into a pontoon damaging my nose); hopefully this does the ticket.

I will be back if it doesnt
