    Idler gear (starter bendix) replacement

I need to replace the idler gear (starter bendix) on a 96 Yamaha 1100 Wave Venture. I assume that I do not need to take out the motor.

Does anybody know which components need to be removed so I can gain access to the front cover and remove the flywheel?

    thanks in advance.

Re: Idler gear (starter bendix) replacement

Hehe.. I just did this yesterday. It's not too bad and took about me about 2 hours. I just bought a 1995 yamaha waveraider 1100 that had wouldn't crank. I checked the starter but after reading a bunch of the posts here I found it was the bendix.

On the raider, I had to pull the gas tank out and I had to remove the power pack (CDI) cover and take off the flywheel cover (8 - 10 bolts). I then used a flywheel puller to remove the flywheel. Once I pulled the flywheel the bendix fell out. It was locked up from rust so I cleaned it, oiled it, and slapped it back in. The ski cranked on the first try after sitting for over a year with no care.

    Hopefully this will help you.

Thanks Spatch, It's windy today so I think I'm going to dig in to it.
