Not trying to bust your bubble but the 787 motor you dont have to remove the flywheel either,717 the stator is under the flywheel.

Sometimes if the stator gets grounded out it will fry the rectifier. Hopefully that didn't happen since that part is built into the mpem. If you find the rectifier is bad though, let me know since I've been working on a project to help with that without spending big $$ on a new mpem.

yikes. well the shop i have it at says they have a new stator for 298 but i got a line up on one from a fellow in the classifieds for 120 shipped. They did the electrical testing and said for sure it was the stator. they have been pretty fair, i have only been charged a half hour to get it summerized from not being winterized and to diagnose the no charge problem. also they said only 2 hours to replace the stator. from what im hearing that is a good deal!!

2 hrs if you have a lot of experience working this motor and a shop buddy to clean all the parts that you remove. it is very tight working quarters. I would say 4-6 hrs. you will need to take it very carefully just to get the exhaust pipe back on with new gaskets and clean mating surfaces and precise torque sequences or it will leak water.

but you have no choice, definately needs to be fixed and it is difficult to find a good shop that won't charge more then the skis is worth to fix.

have you done any diagnostics with an ohm meter? In the shop manual there is a procedure. I went into some detail on this when I had a short in the stator. It is fairly common for metal shavings from the rotor to collect on the stator and short it out, in which case a good vacuuming will fix. could also be rectifier, which i think is part of the MPEM or simply a blown fuse or corroded wiring connectors.

Hey can you help me out, my stator was shorted out to ground and mechanically damaged, after replacing it my ski runs like crap on one piston. If you can shed some insight it's much appreciated! http://www.pwctoday.com/showthread.php?t=472195
