    Short block vs. long block?

When speaking of Rotax engines (such as the 787), what do the terms "short block" and "long block" indicate?

    Thanks!

Short block used to refer to an engine without a head,if you bought one from Seadoo thats the way it came without a head, the long block was an engine with a head, but now most short blocks for watercraft come with the heads, get it ,got it ,good.

      That's nice and confusing. [grin]

Why would they ship an engine without a head? Cylinders, pistons, everything but the cap on top? WTF?!?

Thats the way Seadoo used to do it,must be something in the water up there or something.BTW the short blocklong block terminology comes from automotive backgrounds which makes more sense sinc most people can blot on a set of heads on a car fairly easily.

A "true" shortblock comes with no head.

A rebuilder needs to make sure the motor is within his specs for compression and squish clearances to be able to offer a warranty on the motor, so rebuilders include the head with the "shortblock". Also, it would be very difficult to pressure test a motor with no head on it.
