How to remove starter on 96' Sea-Doo XP?

How do you remove the starter from the 96' Sea-Doo XP? The repair manual simply says
    Remove the following parts.
    cables from starter
    screw of starter rear support
    starter mount screws
I was looking on it, and it seems like I *might* be able to remove the starter without removing the airbox and carbs. Do you guys recommend removing these to get to the starter easier?

I was trying to figure out what screws should be removed to take out the starter. I can clearly see one screw that goes through the starter to a nut on the other side. It looks like I would need a large allen wrench. I feel under the starter with my hand and all I feel is a hole under the bottom side. Is there a screw under there as well? How man screws should be undone to remove the starter?

2...And I'm almost positive its the same size allen bolt. Did you jump the relay to make sure your starter is bad??

Everyone there suggest that I remove the starter and look on it. Feel free to respond there to help me toward the correct solution .
In a nut shell, it starts most times. I have gotten stuck twice when I was on the water with the starter just spining but not engaging the engine. Later when I get home after those incidents and in the process of cleaning, it eventually fires up like nothing happened and start for the rest of the time.

Likely the bendix like others have suggested...A relay is around $40 new if I remember correctly if you pull the starter and the bendix looks fine, or if you replace the starter and you still have problems...

A bendix can "look fine" and be junk if you know how to check it.

Difficult to explain actually, it is more of a "Feel" as to the drag when turning the gear while holding the body of the bendix. Learned from experence.

Ha, okay. Hopefully my starter rebuild shop know about starter bendix enough to tell me their opinion then.

I am in the process of removing the air box to access the starter, however I think I might get stuck. I pulled off the airbox cover and I am removing the six allen screws inside which holds the metal mesh (flame arrester I think? ). I however see two allen screws at the back of the airbox connected to the engine, but it looks like it would need a very short drive head angled allen key to fit in that space. It would seem like I would need to remove those two bolts to get the airbox off. Is there any other method of getting them off? I might try a small vice grip to fit the small space to get them out. What do you guys think?

I have no idea what bolts you "think" are attached to the airbox.
