kawasaki sts 750 cranks, but won't start ???

I'm new to jet skis and my brother in laws recently purchased 1997 kawasaki sts 750 won't start.
It ran fine for around 8 hrs since he's had it with no problems. Yesterday in the water it ran fine. We turned it off and maybe 5 minutes later when we wanted to ride again we tried to start it but it wouldn't start. It just cranks and cranks. We've tried to choke it but doesn't work. We've tried holding down the throttle but that doesn't work. It is getting spark. The fuel filter is about 1/2 full of fuel. The spark plugs have been replced with new since the problem.
Any ideas would be helpful. Thanks.

pour a little gas into the carbs to see it fires.

    Take compression in both cylinders.

check to ensure you have gas in the tank and/or you don't have knob on off or something. go to reserve etc, etc...

any fuel leaks? are you getting spark, did you check the ground wire? are you flooded now? you might want to pull the plugs and turn it over some to get some of the fuel out of there, but keep your face away from it or youll be sorry, and check all of the lines comming from the carb, try to blow into one of the fuel lines and look and listen for fuel leaks? did it start when you pulled the cover off, if so then you might have an exaust leak.

Haven't seen any leaks. The tank is and was about 1/2 full, but we did try to set it to the reserve and that was a no go. We pulled the cover and tried to start it, but that didn't work.

Thanks for the ideas we'll try them.

It has good spark, but where is the ground wire you speak of?

fill the tank all the way up (helps it start aka more pressure in the fuel system if you have a leak). also check for an exhaust leak, if will run fine as long as your moving, but as soon as you stop it will fill up the engine compartment with exhaust, try venting the hood and starting it. also pull and clean the plugs, always worked for me

We grounded the plug to the block and it fired okay that is how we checked the spark.

Tried the gas in the carbs and it starts fine now. Should I bring tools to the lake to remove the air cleaner or is this something that doesn't happen often?

    Thanks for all the help.

It needs fixing. You have a fuel delivery problem.

the fuel system should be air tight. there is a check valve that allows air in, but not out. check it. On these old skis I always crack the gas cap prior to starting just a little. You should hear air come out. this is a quick check on the fuel system tightness. (Don't completely vent it, just crack until you hear the tank venting and close it).

If you don't hear the system venting, you need go through the fuel system, vent valve, hoses, connections etc to ensure the system is tight. during operation, the positive pressure from the fuel evaporating ensures you have adaquate net head to the carb. Otherwise, at about a half a tank, it starts miss firing.

check the tank, filters, ect to ensure they are clean.
