  1. Re: 98 GSXL Intermittent start cycling / loss of power

Thanks I did try to run it and take out the 15 amp fuse at the MPEM and the ski just dies as if it was turned off. Is that normal?
  2. Re: 98 GSXL Intermittent start cycling / loss of power

So today I assembled up the magneto and tuned pipe and started it up. Out of the water it runs great. In the water under load while sitting on the trailer it bogs and there is hardly any power. The...

Re: Bad MAGNETO,OR 2 BAD mpem

are you getting voltage delivered to the coil primary from the mpem. You need to be getting 20VDC back there to trigger the coil. Did you check all grounds are good. On the 951 there are grounds...
  4. Re: 98 GSXL Intermittent start cycling / loss of power

You would need to cut those wires were they splice together to interrupt the circuit. I used an old plug off another harness and i tested the two wires off the pickup coil. That's called the static...
  5. Re: 98 GSXL Intermittent start cycling / loss of power

Pull the 3 wires off the harness that goes from magneto into the MPEM and you will have no AC voltage produced. Also before doing that if you place the voltmeter in AC voltage and measure with the...
  6. Re: 98 GSXL Intermittent start cycling / loss of power

Interesting, so as a test technically If I remove the 3 stator wires from the MPEM I shouldn't get the ignition failure but at some point the battery will drain out.
  7. Re: 98 GSXL Intermittent start cycling / loss of power

Great advice thanks. I will try that and report back. The battery so far doesn't die it allows plenty of power for cranking even after the ski starts dying.
  8. Re: 98 GSXL Intermittent start cycling / loss of power

No not yet. I ran series of tests. Trigger coil resistance and it's good. Dynamic test voltage on trigger coil is also good. The part where is got weird is the voltage at the white wire for the coil...

    thanks i didn't know that!
  10. Re: 1998 XP Limited Erratic Cranking - crank, crank, (pause) crank crank crank (pause

No the grey plug doesnt have ground. The grounds are bolted to the cover.
  11. Re: 1998 XP Limited Erratic Cranking - crank, crank, (pause) crank crank crank (pause

Must be the season for this issue i'm having the same thing happen on my 98 GSXL! So its the MPEM internally. Did you try pulling the magneto plug off? Watch how it cranks perfect without the plug...
  12. 98 GSXL Intermittent start cycling / loss of power

Looking for some advice I did a ton or research and I cant find a solution.

    1. Lately my ski started doing this issue where it wont crank continuously. Checked the battery voltage, and its strong,...

Yes look at #29 and #33.

No the top end repair was done with the engine inside. I struggled setting pistons into the cylinders by myself. I developed a trick that worked like a charm. Place a worm...

Re: Need help 951 silver cylinders

That wont affect it. The rings start compression above that crack. Put jb weld or a high heat epoxy and ride it.

Exactly I guess the only time it wouldn't work is if the diaphragm is stiff and the pressure and vacuum can't pop the needle seat.
