    Re: 550 steering

Ha - I just installed them on a 550 a week ago and will confirm that they are indeed too long. I found that running a tap down the new cable ends got them to turn in several more turns before...

    Re: 550 steering

FWIT - cable ends are not the only place slop is introduced. The cable itself can (and do) get worn over time by the cable rubbing inside walls of the housing. When the inside of the cable housing...
  3. Re: Help Troubleshooting: 440 and 550 won't start when hot unless throttle opened ful

UPDATE: took the 550 out yesterday for a test with the one way check valve mounted in the tank on the RES line. Perfect. Ski starts and idles now when hot. So if you have a hard staring ski when...
  4. Re: Help Troubleshooting: 440 and 550 won't start when hot unless throttle opened ful

Thanks Bill. I needed to be more clear.
The 85 440 has the OEM 38mm Mikuni carb that came with it.
The 88 550 has the OEM 44mm Mikuni carb that came with it and rev limiter is present but I...
  5. Re: Help Troubleshooting: 440 and 550 won't start when hot unless throttle opened ful

UPDATE: after watching these carbs when the motor is turned off I discovered that both of them feed fuel (or air) backwards from the return line through the carb and back to the tank. Given 15...
  6. Re: are all sbn 44s the same - are the aftermarket sbn 44s any good

Yes - I currently have the BN44. Will purchase a spacer for the manifold to push it out far enough for clearance.

So the ad says "OEM replacement for Yamaha SuperJet" for the one on ebay. I...

sub $200 - can you recommend? thanks
  8. are all sbn 44s the same - are the aftermarket sbn 44s any good

Thinking about upgrading a 550 to the SBN 44. I see there are both after market and new 44s available (used ones are almost as much). Are the after market ones any good? Can they by rebuilt with a...
  9. Re: Help Troubleshooting: 440 and 550 won't start when hot unless throttle opened ful

    Oh, and the seat/needle is a 2.0.
  10. Re: Help Troubleshooting: 440 and 550 won't start when hot unless throttle opened ful

It's a 1988, factory half pipe, BN44, rear exhaust converted but still using OEM waterbox, STD OEM pistons with fresh lower end seals and fresh rings (and hone).
  11. Re: Help Troubleshooting: 440 and 550 won't start when hot unless throttle opened ful

UPDATE: Appears a leaking needle/seat in the carb was the issue on the 550. I disassembled the carb to test the popoff pressure and the assembly would leak completely down in about 5 seconds or...

Re: Slow Cranking 750SX brain buster

I had a similar problem and it was the little spinner gizmo on the end of the starter shaft that fits into the flywheel housing cover. It was bound up on itself as the little C clip in it came loose...

    Re: Depth finder?

Thanks for clarifying Hemmjo. I do tend to use the two terms interchangeably and you are right there is a difference. As far as the bubble layer - I have not experienced that in our jet boat under...

    Re: Depth finder?

Oh, the rear cap thought is for the older 440/550s. It would be possible to mount the transponder in the engine compartment as a thru hull but if the ski is on plane then I think that area of the...

    Re: Depth finder?

I have thought about this as well. We use a jet bass boat to scope out new riding areas in the river and have two Garmin Striker 4s mounted. They will read down to about 1.5 ft (that's why I bought...
  16. Re: Help Troubleshooting: 440 and 550 won't start when hot unless throttle opened ful

Duramgoat - I see you are in Jasper IN. I grew up in Princeton, boating in the Patoka Reservoir. In fact I remember when they were filling it - had to watch out for stumps! Got a ticket once on...
  17. Help Troubleshooting: 440 and 550 won't start when hot unless throttle opened fully

Hello. Hoping there is common knowledge of how to fix this issue.

Issue: Motors won't start without WOT when hot.
We have two skis doing the same thing. Both will start cold and idle and...
  18. Wanted: old Rippenkroeger's RIPPIN FREESTYLE DVD or VHS

Just looking for Larry's old RIPPEN FREESTYLE video. Any format. I believe it is about 30 minutes long and shows basic freestyle techniques (not racing). Thanks.
  19. Re: Any Issue with 1.5 ID aluminum pipe for js550 rear exhaust conversion?

Might not matter now - found a 1.75 ID aluminum tube that will work. Still curious as to what users have experienced.

  20. Any Issue with 1.5 ID aluminum pipe for js550 rear exhaust conversion?

Getting ready to covert from side to rear exhaust on an 88 js550 with FP 1/2 pipe and OEM water box. Any issues with using a 1.5 ID aluminum pipe for this along with 1.5 or 1 5/8 wet exhaust hose to...

Re: js550 starter pinion gear quesiton

It locks in one direction, free spins in the other. Question is how hard should it be to turn by hand to free spin direction? My theory is it was binding just enough to stop it from turning slightly...

    js550 starter pinion gear quesiton

Had my starter lock to the flywheel yesterday. Took the starter out which freed up the flywheel (very relieved to see it was only the starter that was broke) and can't see anything specifically...
  25. Re: Garden Hose running theory question - ok to turn on water first if monitoring flo

True. The thing I was curious about was how long it takes the water to reach that point - especially if running on a garden hose. Since my T fitting will direct water in both directions Iím not sure...
  26. Garden Hose running theory question - ok to turn on water first if monitoring flow

OK, so I have a theory question (have not done this and not sure I will). This pertains to an 88 js550. I know not to run on a hose for long and all that, just was noodling this topic in my head and...
  27. Re: JS440 and JS550 Piston Ring Reference - putting this together

Just closing this thread out. I managed to figure out my issue: was sold the wrong ring in a NOS purchase. As it turns out this is quite common in NOS merchandise like this as the seller rarely...

Thanks for the quick response Sorejo - much appreciated. That squares.
  29. Quick question: 88 js550 gas filler hose, clamps on both ends?

Reassembling an 88 sj550. Got the water box back in and went to put on the gas filler hose and can't for the life of me figure out how to put and even worse tighten a hose clamp on the filler/cap...
  30. Re: JS440 and JS550 Piston Ring Reference - putting this together

According to the Kawasaki manual... I wish I had seen this a couple of weeks ago.

  31. Re: JS440 and JS550 Piston Ring Reference - putting this together

Discovery: 84 and prior appear to be flat rings where as the 85 and newer are tapered (keystone). The confusing this is that the 3014 ring appears to be flat (purchased nos to confirm and it is flat...
  32. Re: JS440 and JS550 Piston Ring Reference - putting this together

Crap. Help. I can not find a ring for my pistons! Just got in a 13003-3014 and it will not fit in the 13001-3017!

  35. JS440 and JS550 Piston Ring Reference - putting this together

I ran into an issue when purchasing rings for an 85 js440 and an 88 JS550. Both are stock cylinders and measured out fine - so I just wanted to hone and re-ring them (STD). I ordered parts based on...
  36. Re: Help Identifying Aftermarket Exhaust Parts installed on JS550

  37. Re: Help Identifying Aftermarket Exhaust Parts installed on JS550

  38. Re: Help Identifying Aftermarket Exhaust Parts installed on JS550

I will check to see if there are water lines going to it... but I don't recall any.
  39. Re: Help Identifying Aftermarket Exhaust Parts installed on JS550

How much gain will an aftermarket waterbox give over an OEM? I haven't got into this ski yet so I don't know if the engine has been modified much - will know later this week. Thanks.
  40. Help Identifying Aftermarket Exhaust Parts installed on JS550

  41. Re: Help Needed - Spring found stuck to 750 motor flywheel - where did it come from??

  42. Re: Help Needed - Spring found stuck to 750 motor flywheel - where did it come from??

Interesting as the bendix did completely die (it was going in and out all summer).
  43. Help Needed - Spring found stuck to 750 motor flywheel - where did it come from??
