Those carbs are easy to rebuild. I was intimidated by mine but rebuilt it a week ago and it was much simpler than I expected. If you haven't yet, pick up the manual -- it has the diagrams for the...

Re: JS550 runs great for 50 yards.

Rebuilt the carb and fuel pump. Both seemed perfect, but went ahead and rebuilt, anyway. Didn't have very good carb base gaskets so I made some new ones and cranked it down tight. Found a slice in...

Is the head on? Stuff a rope down the spark plug hole. Head off? Monkey wrench (or put the head back on.)

Re: Registering old stand ups help

Must depend on the state. Here in WI you don't need anything on boats under 16' to register them but the hull number.

Re: JS550 runs great for 50 yards.

Ordered a rebuild kit today. I can see fuel being pumped back out the return line, but I don't know if that means it's working correctly. Since I have my doubts about the quality of the carb...

The vent seems to work. It's got a one way valve on it that works and I can blow air through it when I pull it off from the tank.

Did it smoke from there? Mine was spewing smoke from the waterbox. Took it out and found a big hole there. Replaced it and now nothing else is leaking smoke.

Re: JS550 runs great for 50 yards.

Leaking at the manifold, maybe? I used all new gaskets and torqued to spec. Used 1211 on the exhaust manifold, too. Not sure where it could be leaking from. Replaced the waterbox and a few other...

Pretty much just started it and went for it. The only new parts were crank seals -- the pistons, rings and cylinders were all in good shape, still.

It's a BN38. The rev limiter is hooked up, but I also tried it with that disconnected and it didn't make a difference.

JS550 runs great for 50 yards.

Re: How to install primer on BN38?

The plugs that came with my kit were too small. There's some wiggle room between them and the carb body. I'm going to try to use some 3m 5200 to fit them.

Re: 550 smokes when I crank it

The starter grounds through the block. There should be a ground wire going from the battery to the block, and from the block to the ebox.
