    Did it have fuel in the tank? Sometimes the needle valve won't seat properly and the tank will pressurize in the heat, fuel will slowly leak by and fill up the crankcase. Post a picture of the engine.

    use an appropriate size can to trace then use a jig zaw, move slowly and the sand down sharp edges.

    Personally I've never done one on a 550 but I would expect it to make the nose ride too high....
