    I slid the engine forward and pulled the mid-shaft assembly. Felt like there was a bit of play in the bearing. Female splines looked okay...

    I did replace the stator housing with a used one, but I don't see any way that could be relevant.

    Splines definitely are engaging, as bumping the starter spins the impeller.

    There is a small gap between the impeller and stator housing of about 1/8". Assembly is stopping short leaving about a 1/4" between wear ring and transom plate. So I don't think shaft position in...

    Trying to re-install the pump unit after a rebuild. Driveshaft slides into female splines on intermediate shaft but won't go all the way in. Seems to hit a hard stop about 1/4" short of the wear ring...

    Both pulse tube lines were attached and tight. I actually replaced them with tighter fitting tubing because I thought that may have been an issue but it did not help.

    Reeds looked good. One had a couple little chips out of the very tip of it but otherwise they were all fine.

    I did not do a leak down test on the motor as SBT states that they do that before shipping the engine.

    Motor failed the last time because engine had water in it when I bought it. Rear cylinder...

    Throttle cable is fine. All jets and screws were pulled out and sprayed through with carb cleaner. Mixture screws set to stock. Accelerator pump seemed fine as I can see it pumping into the carbs...

    I'm having a real hard time getting my 2001 XL800 to run right. Here is what I have done:


    installed sbt rebuilt engine
    rebuilt carbs w/ sbt kits
    blocked off oil pump
    new fuel lines on...

    Disregard my previous post. I was able to press them out... they were just in really bad shape so it took some extra coercion.

    Is this stator housing too screwed up for use? it has some pitting...

    I'm guessing there should have been a nut inside the cone. There was nothing.


    And yes those are metal shards inside the bearing and cone.

    Ok will pull pump and inspect as soon as I figure out how to get this last screw out of the ride plate. It's spinning and not coming out. Looks like a common issue so I will reference other threads

    Not really much space to make up there. I torqued it on with a 2 foot bar and that's as far as I could get it.

    Front mounts do not line up either. Distance from front to rear mount holes matches distance of holes in hull.

    Will post some more pictures when I get home tonight.

    I slid the engine forward and wiggled the midshaft coupler and pushed in. Even whacked it with a rubber mallet a bit. Didn't budge at all.

    Dumb question: I assume you mean clear oil lines? I didn't think it was possible to see the oil lines to the rear carb once the exhaust chamber is installed.

    Pulled and took apart the engine. Rear cylinder and piston are trashed. Not sure what caused the damage. The power valve looked fine so I don't think that was the issue. What else could cause this...

    If I end up rebuilding it myself I will certainly add the clips. If I go with an SBT motor my understanding is that the clips are not necessary as their power valves are an improved design.
