City of Destin looking to extend the no-wake zone

http://www.nwfdailynews.com/news/zon...enda-city.html

"DESTIN — Does Destin harbor need a bigger no-wake zone?
That’s the question Destin City Council will take up at Monday’s meeting, when a resolution asking Okaloosa County to expand the zone southward and put up signs to that effect is on the agenda.
The idea is the brainchild of Councilor and charter Captain Kelly Windes.
“The present no-wake zone needs expanding,” Windes said at a recent council meeting. “Some fishermen are against this — I guess I, myself, was one of them, but ... we’ve got more jet-skiers, more pontoon riders” and not all boaters are careful about them.
“A lot of mornings, all the boats will be inside the jetties catching fish,” Windes told The Log later, “and yachts just come barreling through.”
“The big boats do not slow down and they are causing wakes,” Charles DuPlantis of Boogie’s Water Sports told The Log. “Big boats that run in and out of the pass are the problem.”
Public Services Director Steve Schmidt said this week that the council can’t act on the problem directly because Okaloosa County holds the permits for all the signs and navigation markers. He said the resolution requests the county extend the no-wake zone south to the northern end of the jetties and provide navigation markers at the intersection of the Old Pass Lagoon Channel and the East Pass Channel — roughly the entrance to the harbor."

If they get their wish it would really suck....

Seems to me there should be better things to talk about at these meetings. Like jobs and cleaning up the beach of trash.

I have been waiting for it to come up on the Okaloosa County Commissioners meeting agenda. Nothing has been posted about it.

I bet they tabled the motion. I would hope that other topic's would be more important than "no wake zones"

Re: City of Destin looking to extend the no-wake zone

Well its coming up for a public hearing on June 15th. I have no idea what to do except go to the hearing and tell them its a bad idea.

http://www.nwfdailynews.com/news/pas...ders-wake.html

DESTIN — To fight beach erosion, Okaloosa County officials are considering increasing restrictions on watercraft activity in East Pass.
An idle-speed/no-wake zone currently is in place near the harbor.
Destin city officials have requested a 2,500-foot southward extension of the zone to curb “some of the erosion they’re experiencing there on the east side of that channel,” said John Hoftstad, the county’s director of public works.
But the extension would be less restrictive. Boaters would have to maintain certain speed limits and cause minimal wake.
“We’ve had several discussions with FWC, marine patrol and others … and it was not deemed appropriate to have it as an idle-speed/no-wake zone,” Hofstad told the board.
County Commissioner James Campbell said the designation is a good idea.
“I spent last summer out there on a regular basis on the weekends and between the point being washed away … anything we can do there would help,” Campbell said. “Anything we can do would relieve a little bit of pressure.”
Commissioners voted Tuesday to hold a public hearing June 15 on the proposed slow-speed/minimum-wake zone.

Re: City of Destin looking to extend the no-wake zone

It is all the charter boat captains and large boats that blow through the pass at 25+ knots. And right behind them are all the rental ski's that Mr. DuPlantis rents out jumping wakes. It doesn't make sense that Kelly Windes is behind this effort

Re: City of Destin looking to extend the no-wake zone

The vote on this issue has been moved to the end of july meeting. Went to the meeting tonight and learned a few things. The commissioner for the Destin area is an A$$, seems like this is his pet project, my Commissioner isn't and those meetings suck.

Re: City of Destin looking to extend the no-wake zone

Well the County Commissioners passed a resolution to petition the FL DNR for the Slow Speed/Minimum Wake zone.
