Filling a 55 gallon drum

Is it against the law to take a 55 gallon drum to the pump and fill it? I know in California they have some kind of rules on what you can fill with gas at the pump but not sure here. I am actually thinking of taking the drum empty to Havasu next weekend and filling it there. Save the weight on my trailer and much easier to load. Does anyone see this as an issue?

Thanks.

Eric, all I know is that pump gas will be quite a bit cheaper in Havasu.

Don't see why not. When I was a teenager working the station, just about the only thing we couldnt fill was a milk jug!

Re: Filling a 55 gallon drum

I would just call a gas station and ask them.

I know there are stickers on the gas pumps here in Missouri that say you can only fill approved containers.

The gas station attendant is the only one you will have to worry about.

It is funny you say you could not fill a milk jug. When I was in Roatan that is exactly what the gas came in. I drove all over the place looking for a gas station on my little scooter only to find out that it was the little covered part next to the grocery store..haha. I got it from a guy with no shoes and then he tried to sell me drugs after that (which, for the record, I declined of course). That is one stop shopping at its best. Good times.

I guess I could call a station in Havasu and ask. Seems like a logical idea.

Re: Filling a 55 gallon drum

Uh...approved containers only..that's federal law if I am not mistaken. I wouldn't want to be anywhere near a 55 gallon drum filled with gas, unless it was specifically designed for taht purpose. Frankly speaking, I'd be much more comfortable with a dozen 5 gallon plastic cans....

Of course if your PU had an approved carry tank and pump attached, you;d be all set.

That's common farm equipment here in NM..most ranch trucks have either a saddle tank ( real nice if you can find one cheap enough) or a big box tank mounted in the bed.
