*** JOHN JONES STEEL 2007 NZ NATIONALS – TOP 3 IN EACH CLASS…

The New Zealand Jet Sport Nationals were held at Lake Roto Kohatu in Christchurch over 3 days in late February. The weather certainly kept the dust down on the Friday and Saturday but sunblock came out of hiding on Sunday. The setting for this national event is on a small private lake belonging to the very strong Canterbury Club, so no wonder they are producing some talent. Their club certainly dominated in the poleski classes with the Novice Ski being won by young 16 year old Mark Bainbridge, just beating another junior star Brodie Askew. Ski Stock was taken out by Trent Brown, whose skill on the water has to been seen to be believed! In Poleski Limited there was fierce competition between upgraded novice rider Mark Bainbridge and Steve Amende from Dunedin, with Bainbridge taking the podium. Novice runabout honours belongs to Thomas Hill from Canterbury who kept Jayden Klinac off the winning post.

Friday racing also included the Veterans and they were all fighting hard for the top positions. Australian guest Les Cooke took out the Veterans Open runabout class on a Seadoo Centre boat belonging to top Kiwi rider Sam Harvey. Harvey was third at the World Finals in Runabout Open and plans to head back again this year – aiming even higher up the podium. Veterans Poleski was won by Marshall Brown – father of the up and coming star Trent Brown. Years of waterskiing and hours of practise have certainly assisted this family in taking home plenty of trophies. The Veterans Stock class saw Brett Hyslop from Auckland at the top of the table, chased hard by Russell Westbrooke, both on stock Seadoo RXP’s.

The Premier classes race on Saturday and Sunday, with NZ Number One plates up for grabs. The Womans class, although low in numbers, saw some great competition between kiwi born Kylie Ellmers, second year rider Claire Harvey, and Melissa Westbrooke – both following in family footsteps. Ellmers took the top position but not without a battle. Michael Carstairs, World Champ in Sport for 2005 and 2006, was again the winner of this class, with his mechanic Brad Clarke behind him. It was still anyones’ game going in to the last round of the Poleski Open race with the very skilled Trent Brown narrowly beating Cole Askew and getting line honours and the top of the podium. Todd Barham, 3rd in Amateur Ski at the World Finals, took the third spot.

The Runabout stock class was the biggest and best for the spectators – with most the entrants from the North Island but stiff competition from the South. The fast Stock RXP of Sam Harveys couldn’t catch winner Carl Lampe Junior – also a multi World Champion at the 2006 World Finals at Lake Havasu. Carl was also voted Number One Jet Sport Rider of the Year – for his successes in 2006 both locally, nationally and internationally. This rising star is one to watch!

The premier class, Runabout Open was full of surprises. Clearly on the water, Sam Harvey had it in the bag on his super fast turbo charged RXP – built by the skilled Les Cooke. But in the third race of the day he had crank issues and had to give up his fight to be No. 1 in New Zealand again. This was hugely disappointing for Harvey and Team Woodbine who have worked and trained so hard for so long. But in true Harvey style, it won’t stop his quest for another World Title in Arizona in October this year. The New Zealand champion for 2007 is Christchurch rider Shane Taylor, riding a very fast 2stroke Kawasaki. Closely behind him was Carl Lampe Junior, followed by Garth Simonsen, both from Wellington.

The John Jones Steel 2007 New Zealand Jet Ski Nationals is the pinnacle of racing on the kiwi calendar. NZJSBA President Lisa Dermott and the Canterbury Club yet again put on an event to be praised. Everything was impeccably organised (except the rain) and with no serious injuries or damage can only be a testament to a great course and well organised competition. World Finals announcer Dawn Dawson was the icing on the cake to a very successful, enjoyable and thrilling weekend. Next year the event is being hosted in the North Island by the Auckland Jet Sport Association at the stunning Blue Lakes in the tourist mecca Rotorua.

… email your photos to me so that kiwis can get plenty of exposure in this mag. He already has 150 of my World Finals photos and is getting heaps of the Nationals.

James is doing this for the good of the sport and is nowhere close to breaking even on costs – but he believes we need magazines like this to promote the sport and to keep interest up. Please support him and his quest to get or keep us on the map!

*** NEW BLOOD

A topic hot on the agenda at the AGM was our lack of new blood, and the need for more social and recreational riding. Great to see this group of Aucklanders that are keen to get something started. Please help them by promoting the ride, by helping and by joining in for fun. We all must assist and encourage the distributors and retailers to work with their local clubs and get more social events happening. No one has to give up any contact details – just pass on the information about events.

If you ask most racers how they got in to the sport, it either stemmed from social riding – or by word of mouth from a friend or colleague. Every time you see someone riding or at the ramp why not go and have a chat to them, get their mobile number or email address - invite them to come and watch a few races, go to a few meetings, join clubs, visit retailers, NZJSBA or club websites. By getting new people into the sport now will help the clubs and the association stay strong, and will help keep buyers interested in upgrading, up-specing, and updating – which in turn is good for the retailers and distributors.

It should be a chain of support….

Owner of jetski – goes on social rides with club/retailer – joins club/makes friends – helps clubs/nzjsba financially/physically – starts racing – spends more on mechanical and body parts (not their own body!) – upgrades/upspecs/race mods - more money for retailers and distributors – continued support for nzjsba – riders tell someone else about jetskiing – and they buy a ski -…. so begins the circle again…

Word of mouth is the most powerful advertising tool … use your mouths to help! I know you can use them coz I have partied with most of you at plenty of pubs … AND heard you yell on race days!

*** Extracts about Marketing and “Word of Mouth”

Marketing by way of mouth

By Reuben Schwarz – The Dominion Post | Monday 5 March 2007

… “Word of mouth advertising is the best, and companies such as Google and Skype owe part of their success to being easy to understand.

Colourful stories about how companies start out, such as Google's birth in a dorm room, are also good to get the public on side.

"It's not just about technology. It's about creating an emotional connection," Mr Seba says.

"Their customers should be their best salespeople."

Word of Mouth Can Be Your Best Marketing Tool »

Motivating Others To Tell Your Story For You

Sales-focused business people love buzzwords. Seminars, books and articles all push the hot marketing solutions, and salespeople and students of marketing incorporate the new vocabulary into their discussions. If you're looking for a revolutionary way to get customers, there's no shortage of phrases to use: database prospecting by the numbers; multi-level targeted/direct marketing; lead compilation from channels of distribution focus; cold call'em when they're warm.

Sales and marketing departments will find that there are definite benefits to using some of these approaches. Unfortunately, there are limitations to a strategy that puts too much emphasis on reaching prospects who know little or nothing about the firm or its products and services.

Our studies and experience indicate that businesses see better results by focusing on a simple marketing tool, one that's been with us for hundreds of years: word of mouth. This back-to-basics approach--one that is too often overlooked--pays the most dividends for fewer dollars.

*** 2007 NORTH ISLAND WINTER ENDURANCE SERIES
