Newbie with Questions

Hello Folks,

I should be purchasing my ski this weekend and I havea few basic questions I am hoping to get answered. I live in Boston during the week and have a place in South Dartmouth on the weekends. I wanted to know if anyone has experience in the rivers/bay in that area, and what realistically I can expect from my ski.

I am buying a Honda Aquatrax F-12n/a. I deally I would like to use it in the rivers around the area, however I would also like to make 7-9 'long' trips over the summer as well. These would be from New Bedford to MV, Block Island, Newport, etc. Are these realistic expectations? Can these ski's handle te open water 10-12 miles out? What type of riding gear do you all suggest/wear? Are some of the areas in the Cape and around Boston off-limits to jet skis? I found a few articles from 2001 where it looked liek they had bans in alot of places in MA.

As far as group rides are concerned I would love to get in on these. Do they happen frequently? Whats the avg cruising speed(I could be 1 or 2 up depending if the g/f is around, and unfortunately I am not interested in the x versions with their turbos at this point, so I'm assuming top speed to be low 50's)?

Any other advice you feel would be important I would appreciate.

Regards,

Zack

Re: Newbie with Questions

I've had a Honda for the past 6 seasons... First a F-12X and now a F-15X. I ride regularly from Taunton MA down the river all the way to Sakonnet Point and around returning to launch with usually about a quarter of a tank of gas to spare. The F N/A engine would be more efficient than the turbo so long cruises are certainly in the equation for the Honda line.

As far as open ocean riding the F-12 hull is pretty stable but is a wet ride in moderate chop. I installed a splash guard and that helped a little but a good pair of glasses helps keep the spray from the eyes. The F-15 hull is nearly dry ride in most/all conditions. I've been out in all water conditions including some pretty big waves (small craft advisory in the Bay) and its a fun ride. The Honda hulls are very playful and like to get some air but are predictable in its behavior.

If you have any other questions on the Honda or the area just let me know.

I Ride around Boston Harbor all the time. No problems as long as you stay clear of the airport and boats etc. The islands are killer, I grew up in the area and know my way around the islands pretty well. We did a coupe island excursions last season. I dont think they will let you up the Charles. I have done some riding down south Dartmouth too, we used to launch at Padanaram harbor and ride around the islands. Welcome to the group. See ya next season.
