La Jolla Shores Jetski Rental Hearing Tonight!

Just got this email this morning from a Scuba Diving Group I'm a part of:

Sorry for the late notice, but the La Jolla Shores Association is
meeting tonight (Wed, May 13) at 7 PM at Sumner Auditorium at Scripps
Institution of Oceanography to take public input on and then vote on a
recommendation to make to the City about whether to allow a new vendor
to rent out jet skis at the Shores.

The Shores/Cove area -- with all the ocean swimmers and divers out way
beyond the surf zone -- is about the worst place that one could
possibly start a jet ski concession from a safety standpoint... not to
mention the aesthetics of diving under the very load whine of jet
skis. Any peace you enjoy underwater will be ruined. I strongly urge
you all to attend and express yourselves.

I'd be really curious to see what your opinion is on this issue. On one hand I think if there is a rental place in La Jolla Shores, it would make my life easier as I could launch my ski when I dive out of the cove (Sure beats swimming!). But I could definitely see the safety hazzards for divers and swimmers around the shores/cove. I highly doubt the council will approve it, as I get smug looks from the locals when I dive in their area.

This is a weird one. Would people be launching straight into the surf? I would guess yes. I can see some serious safety issues with this in regards to inexperienced skiers. Plus the people of La Jolla, with their sense of entitlement, would never allow this to happen. Interesting.

Well you have to remember that 9/10 times, La Jolla surf is a joke (even more during the summer months). That's why we refer to it as Lake La Jolla. I would love it as a possibility to Launch from there, and being able to cruise north towards Torrey Pines. However back to reality, you're totally right about this never happening. I think it's kind of interesting though regardless.

It would be a great launch spot...There is nowhere to launch between Oceanside and Mission Bay...

Re: La Jolla Shores Jetski Rental Hearing Tonight!

I'm all about "against restrictions" when it comes to PWC's, but have to agree that the cove would not be a preferable spot for a rental business. Maybe it's not a rental in the conventional way where you jump on and off you go, I think of guided tours.
First off, the entire cove is a habitat, speed limit is 5 mile/hour, then you have the big swim area. So you have a long way to get to open water and the kelp fields will do a number on rescues for people with no experience.
Mute point to talk about, it will never fly anyway.

No Ramp, the driveway is hard packed sand to reach the beach area to unload. Mainly used by kayaks. The lifeguards are using beach dollies for their ski's.

Wow.... I totally forgot about this thread

I had no idea it was legal to launch there... I'm sure it would be a great experience. I've never seen anyone even attempt to launch there with anything over 15hp. I would love to cruise around that area though.
