Hazards~
The east side (Oakland side) of the Bay Bridge is under major construction, and because of all the commercial traffic, mooring balls, and barges in place, we WILL NOT be traveling under the Bay Bridge on the East side of Treasure Island AT ANY TIME! The course has been amended for passage on the SF side only.
San Francisco has established PWC restriction zones along the waterfront because of all the commercial Ferry, Tug, and Pilot traffic in the area. The course has been set to keep you clear of all these areas. Please study it and know it.
Fog.
We will not run in reduced visibility conditions, but if you practice down there, be aware it comes in fast and it comes in thick, more so in the mornings and early evenings.
Commercial traffic.
Tankers, Tugs, Cruise Ships, Commercial Fishing boats, Pilot boats, Recreational boats, Ferry Boats, and millions of Sailboats make SF Bay one of the busiest ports in the Nation. The course will keep you on open water and out of harms way – but KNOW the right of way rules for navigation at all times.
Misc…
The coast guard’s Vessel Traffic Service (VTS marine channel 14) is located on the top of Treasure Island and they have an unobstructed view of all boating activity taking place in the bay. They are like the air traffic controller of boaters in the bay, and on top of that, the coast guard runs one of the busiest stations in the bay from T.I.
Refraining from jumping a 6 foot roller from a Pilot or Tugboat like you would do in the delta will get us invited back again next year. There is a reason there are very few PWC events in the Bay and a lot of work went into pulling this one off. I respectfully ask that you only do what you came to San Francisco Bay to do, and that’s race like pros on the established course. 2 words they do not mess around with down here – is
Homeland Security. Stay away from anchored ships, the SF Shoreline, Bridge supports, and the construction crews, and we’ll be just fine. I can’t remember the last time there was an event like this held on the bay.
Maybe it’s a first, maybe it’s not, but it’s a first for DJSA and I thank all of you for helping make some DJSA – San Francisco Bay history.
