How to get skis over pass without freezing

Hey guys,

Need your help on solving this issue. I could just "winterize" them with pink antifreeze but would rather not.

My first idea was a few nalgenes full of boiling water in each hull. Guessing that wouldn't last long enough.

Second idea was i have a wireless indoor outdoor thermometer and could put the outdoor part in the hull of a ski and put the other in the car with me then when it gets close to freezing pull over and run the skis for a bit.

Any other ideas guys?

Nah.....get a hang light with a 100 watt or better light bulb in it....and hang it in the hull (the kind with the cage cover for the glass so it won't bounce around and break). Then run the power cord outside the hull to your trailer and into your vehicle....to an inverter off your cigg lighter - plug it in there and it will generate enough heat (with the seat or hood on) to keep your engine bay from freezing.

thats a good idea...the problem is that i have 4 skis on my trailer and usually take at least 2 if not all 4. I will see if i can get a inverter that will power 2. Any other ideas.

It's what... 25 degrees at the passes? You will be up and over it in no time.. Just blow them out well and drive on through.. It's only when you have a couple days of freezing temps that will cause some damage.

Fire your ski up run it dry. Who cares how cold it gets as long as your head and water box are dry.

Re: How to get skis over pass without freezing

Thanks for the input.

I know it has been a topic of debate if it is necessary to run anti freeze through your ski if you blow it out well. Just wanted to be sure. I think i will keep a thermometer in the hull just incase but otherwise drive on through.

Re: How to get skis over pass without freezing

My ski sat at all winter here in spokane with no problems. I just used the compressor to blow it out. Even if you didn't it wouldn't freeze. Think about a cup of water in the freezer. It takes many hours to freeze. You won't be up there long enough.

Re: How to get skis over pass without freezing

You don't NEED to winterize your Yamaha skis (I can't speak for the SXR).
Make sure you blip the throttle a few times to blow the water out of the waterbox.
The water in the cylinder cooling jackets should drain by itself.
Even if you did have water in the jackets - that wouldn't be a problem unless the jackets were full to the top.

Re: How to get skis over pass without freezing

Why are you pulling them across the pass in the winter in the first place?

Re: How to get skis over pass without freezing

They'll be fine. We we had our skis over in Post falls they sat out one night in freezing temps. Didn't even care. Going over the pass isn't going to be enough time for them to even freeze.
