my squarenose build

this is a 93 sj650 that i first rode when my cousin bought it brand new in 93. i was like 12-13 when i first rode it. 2 years ago i bought it from him for 500 bucks. it had been sitiing on the ground uncovered for about 6-7 years. it had not been crunk up in about 9 years. he did assure me that it would run with little effort. so i brought it home. filled up the gas tank and bought some new plugs. the next weekend i took it to the lake. being this was my first ski i didnt know i needed to clean the carbs out. i figured since it didnt have a bowl that it was fine. well i hit the start button and it wouldn't crank. i dripped some gas down the throat and hit it again. it started.then cut off WOW it took about 45 min of this to finally stay running. it idled a little ruff but i was on it haveing fun. the next weekend it ran just fine. no more problems that season. heres how it looked that year and no i did not have a ski trailer. the utility trailer worked just fine.

Re: my squarenose build

well the next summer rolled around and i found out about this website and the x. so i decided that i wanted to do a few things to my ski. so i started looking around and found a protec pipe and spent all day swapping it out. i really wish i had a ratcheting 12 mm wrench when i did this. my hand was so cramped up when i finally got it done. then i tackled rebuilding the carb. not as bad as i was expecting. needed a new diaphram and rejetting. then took a while to get it dialed in. i also stripped off the graphics and gave it that clean look. notice the duct tape on the battery in the pic. thats where my dog had chewed on it during the winter. but the damn thing still works, will be using it this year also.

Re: my squarenose build

here it is after i put in some new turf. i found a "good deal" on this set on ebay. and i learned one thing, if it aint hydroturf, dont buy it, that chit faded all the way out over the summer. its as white as the ski. and i recovered the chin pad with some vinyl. got excited and took it to the lake. well i got my nerve up and started trying to do some subs. couldnt get it right kept pancaking. came home and got on here and done some more reading. went back to the lake the next day and tried again but this time i pressed my feet against the sides to pull the back up. and finally i got it under. water went up my nose so hard that it was behind my eyelids.i had to press on them to get the water to squirt out. i also got a small sinus infection from that dirty *** water getting forced in to every hole in my face. so i ordered some footstraps from a kiteboarding company and put those in.

Re: my squarenose build

well now this winter i figured i'd build me a 701 and fix up the old girl. i bought a
62t motor
aluminum pole with umi steering and aftermarket spring
2 sheets of b stock
footholds
straight umi o degree bar
skat 9-17
bilge pump
westcoast head
msd enhancer
protec ride plate
riva tri loader grate
r & d reed stuffers
a superclean set of dual 38's but may run 44's instead
2 billet adapters
2 cone air filters
2 riva prefilters
a tiny tach
some new grips
primer
neon orange fuel line
billet bilge outlets and pissers
billet bow eyes
limiting strap
and thinking about some hood straps but not sure i need them

well the ski is completely stripped now and i cut out the footholds. foam is waterlogged so i will be refoaming it also. i did find out that a easy way to get that glue and padding off from the turf is bug and tar remover. seems to work better than anything else i tried.

Re: my squarenose build

its been raining and cold here so i cant lay the glass yet on the holds. i will probably start on the tray and defoaming tommorow and can post up some more pics then. but i wanted to get a nice paintjob for her when she was done. and i wanted to get graphics painted in instead of vinyl graphics. so i worked up a deal with a friend who customizes cars to paint my ski. gonna go with a darkblue house of kolor with some new flakes they came out with. and have yellow graphics. well in trade for the paint job, i'm giving him my 1986 chevy chevette. i was going to take her to the sound offs with 4 fosgate p3 15's in a wall but just lost interest in it. i did get her running really good though, so now he can take it to the next level and customize it. it was ugly but i kinda liked it after i spent all that time under the hood and busting mu knuckles open while fixing it. here is some pics of the hatchback. the snow was from last march.

Re: my squarenose build

well that were i'm at for now. please let me know what you think. after i'm able to do more work i'll post up some more pics. actually after i had bought up all this stuff to build this one up i found a superjet hull in atlanta that i was told belonged to ronnie mac at one time. and had been in some races and stuff back in 1995. i will post a pic of it tommorow and yall can let me know if anybody recognizes it. its completly stripped but has had the bilge reinforced and some sort of scupper valve installed but its inside the hull, the valve is not on the back of the ski opposite the exhaust. never seen one like that. it has some footholds and the tray was aluminum. but i'm going to take my time on that one and get it ready for next year. i think i'm gonna make it a surf ski and take it to panama city and fort walton. i've seen some videos that make surf look like alot of fun but i aint putting my white one anywhere near the salt. i also got another 62t motor out of a wave venture that i'll be putting into it. i alreadt bought everthing that i need for it also but it will just have to sit in my shed until the end of this year until it can get some attention.

Re: my squarenose build

well i got board so i decided to go ahead and start the defoaming process. after cutting the tray out i belive that water was getting in thru the wall under the midshaft. thats where the concentration or water was at. now i'm noy going the lay glass over the bond line in the rear like most do. i will in the bilge but for the back i will be using epoxy to seal up the cracks in the bondline from the out side. the front will get epoxyed and then glassed over. heres a couple more pics while i was defoaming. come on guys, gimme some feedback and let me know what you think.

I think I am jealous of your motor set up. I am doing a similar build but will have to wait on some of the motor goodies. I bought my 650 for $500 also. Found a few things that needed to be done but you can see my build in my sig. About to spray next weekend. Should look nice. Doing a charcoal grey and orange paint job.

Re: my squarenose build

man i bought this motor about 6 months ago and it has been sitting in my sons room the whole time, and i just started buying crap off my wish list as i found it at a good price. my shed is 8 x 8 and it is full of boxes that everything has been shipped in. if you start buying now you can have a crapload of parts and mods to do next winter. i'll check out your build too.

well i had a bolt for the rear motormount break off and i decided to tackle that today. i went a bought a brand new set of bits and easy outs. everything was going great until the damn easyout broke off in the bolt. so i ended up grinding out the whole insert in the hull and will be using epoxy to put a bolt in upside down to secure the motor mount. the epoxy i'm using is what i had used to do the footstraps last year. you guys might want to give it a try instead of the 5200. its cheaper, more redily available and its a fiberglass reinforced 2 part epoxy. loctite part # 99393 about 5 bucks for a fat syringe of it. i also went ahead and taped off the bilge and laid the first coat of enamel in there. will get some pics tomorrow.
