js550 build.

Alright so, I have a fresh motor that hasnt been ran yet and needed something nice to put it in so this morning I went and picked up a nice yellow 87 js550 hull. The motor is a 550 thats bored .5 over, ported, and stroked. It has a high compression head, westcoast exhaust, L&S exhuast manifold, and ill be putting my SBN ocean pro setup from my other ski on it. Also going to put on a nose brace, westcoast gas tank, westcoast waterbox, R&D intake grate, ocean pro ride plate, and either a 440 or 550 pump with a bored nozzle.(not sure which is is. the nozzle has 2 D stamped on it.) Im not going to have a chance to work on it to much during the week, so its mostly going to be done on the weekend. Im going to finish cleaning out the hull tomorrow or Thursday, It was to damn cold today so i just rinsed it out quick. Today all i did was rinse out the hull, put in the motor mounts, and put on the quickturn, bars, and finger throttle.

Also I have a couple questions.
1. Whats the easiest way to get the start/stop wires through the handlepole?, Should I tie a piece of string to them and pull them through?
2. Should i put the pump on before i drop in the engine?

Re: js550 build.

1. string wouldnt hurt. i just snipped the ends off where they hook to ebox and pulled them through. simple enough

2. just make sure you put the shaft in before you put the motor in. the pump can go in any time.

actually scratch that. put the shaft in and make sure its centered in the hole in the back(and tight) then put the pump on. spin the shaft by hand to make sure it spins smoothly and the impeller doesnt rub on the wear ring!

Re: js550 build.

From my expieriance I put the start stop through first, its the only way it fits unless cutting it. And put the driveshaft in as Brandon said. I also have a BRAND new SBN 44 for sale

Re: js550 build.

yea i know the shaft has to go on first, it was already on when i got the hull. i checked it and its centered, and doesn't wiggle around. i still have to take the pump of a spare hull i have. i cant remember if the guy said it was a 440 or 550 pump, but what ever it is it has a bored nozzle, so thats why im putting it on.

aweebitofjt69, i already have an sbn ocean pro setup im gunna take off my other ski, thanks though.

Re: js550 build.

cool. yeah just make sure it spins smooth. i have had luck NOT using shims and just tightening the pump bolts differently to get it aligned and smooth

Re: js550 build.

If the pump is one piece then it's a 440 pump. If it's 3 piece then it's a 550 pump. Also if it's a 440 shaft then the impeller will thread onto the end of the shaft. If it's a 550 shaft there are just splines on the end of the shaft.

Re: js550 build.

Ohh okay, good to know. I've never been sure how to tell them apart. thanks!

EDIT: just went out and checked, its definitely a 550 pump. It also has a prop but i didn't see what pitch. i might end up putting on a new solas 16 that i have laying around if the prop thats already in it is chewed up.

P.S. which is the bilge line, and which is the cooling line that takes in the water?

Re: js550 build.

Bump, anyone know which is the cooling line, and which is the bilge line at the pump?
