Another Super Chicken Salvation

This wont be the typical SC resto, and certainly not Laserman quality, but this ole' turd's been saved to run another day.

Purchased off ebay for a whopping sum of $152.50 I think its a good start for a cheap SC

The girlfriend wants something to fish from, and it'll be fun for her and her family to splash around on this coming summer.

Here's what we've started with:

A well beat 1994 SC650. Pump was out of it when i got it cause the impeller was chewed and burned up.

I had a perfectly good pump and Solas from the TS that i'll never get around to fixing, so that was a good candidate for the SC

This boat is pretty beat, so the plan is to just remove all the faded and torn decals and have a clean slate for maybe a couple new decals of some sort.

The seat is crap, so im looking for ideas on how to recover it so it looks nice.

The thought crossed my mind to use a pair of the cheap folding boat seats from Walmart.

New Hydro-turf is on its way, so it'll get new mats and pads wherever i can stick that stuff down.

-Engine seems tight, 150 and 160 # compression.
-Went thru the fuel system, and carb, runs great now on the trailer, but when under load in the water doesn't want to go unless i close the choke. Obviously too lean ?

I did get to run her for a bit yesturday, and saw a dead even 38.0 MPH on the GPS so im pretty imprssed with that.

Im open to any suggestions or comments.....

Re: Another Super Chicken Salvation

Awwww, so YOU got that 1.... Watched it on ebay, but was just toooo far away. Nice find! My seat cover was also trashed, so i just took it off and pulled the staples. The bad side of that, the seat holds water and you end up soaking your junk. My plan is to build a new seat, just plywood base with foam and vinyl covering so water runs off, ala laserman SC.

I'd suggest doing a pressure test on the motor and spray some soapy water around, find the airleaks before it burns up. Check the usual culprits- carb base, intake manifold, crankseals, etc. (my vote is crankseals)

SBN 44 really wakes it up, but 38 mph is nothing to sneeze at.

Good luck and nice save.

ps- riding in dec?!? you flatlanders make me sick.

Why are you suggesting i do a pressure test ? Because i think its running lean ?

I was pretty happy with the speed. Certainly wasn't expecting that much. I think this Solas prop is working well.

I figure once i get it reliable i'll stop there. ........ well that and making it turn right. LOL
New steering cable on the way.

If the seat overall is in decent shape, check with a local person that does upholstery! They are getting a bit harder to find but they are still out there(probably easier to find in larger locations). I have taken some completely screwed seats into them and they have made them look new for less than $100 using new foam and marine grade vinyl.

Oh..and GREAT Score!

Re: Another Super Chicken Salvation

Congrats on your purchase!! I'm a huge SC fan and think they are one of the best ski's made. 38mph is impressive for this ski and the impeller is to thank i'm sure. Here is a pic of my engine bay with a 800cc PJS motor. Good luck with your new ski.

Re: Another Super Chicken Salvation

Super SANO enigne compartment Zpilot. What kinda performance do you see out of yours ? What is that pipe from ? Is that the matching 800 pipe ? or the aftermarket pipe for a SC i've heard about.

I guess i'll start by pulling the cover off and seeing what my upholstry guy can do. I expect it'll never look as good as it did, but maybe they have some tricks to get it pulled down into the crotch of the seat and make it stay there.

zpilot nice engine compartment, but it looks like the air cleaner is pinched under the hull. How does it come off????

Re: Another Super Chicken Salvation

twin 650 SC! wooOOOT! lol dunno if there's that much room, but that'd be pretty cool.

the pressure test will help find any air leaks, maybe cure that lean condition. i had to change crankseals and intake gaskets on mine, would start great on trailer but barely start in the water. some area's to suspect are carb and intake gaskets, base gasket and crankseals. the motor should hold 8-10 psi for 10 mins or so. i use a couple pieces of old innertube, bolt 1 under carb to block off the intake, the other on the exhaust manifold. a simple gauge and a piece to hookup an airpump. (several posts on how to make a pressure test kit, you'll have to search, none handy)

hopefully i found a 750 for mine, we'll see. again, great find and best luck!
