Well i have finally gotten around to beginning my SX build. Its a 1990 550sx. I picked up up cheap before the summer and it sat on a rack all summer while i road(wrenched...) my other 550's. The hull is in AWESOME shape. My plan is to fix the few blemishes and prep it for paint. then i'm going to paint it. I have a 1/2 pipe that will go on it with a pp motor for now. I would like to get a reed eventually for it but i would like to make this ski my number 1 ski eventually. I'll take pictures and update this thread as i go. Im also doing another js550 build that i will post in a different thread. Im open to tips and ideas so please chime in. thanks alot guys!!
Took off the pole. left the steering cable in the hull because its just easier. Pulled off the turf and front and rear bumpers. scraped the pad off the tray. Just starting to get it ready to do prep work on the spots that need glassing. To get the bolts off that hold the side pads on i used a cut off wheel and cut the heads of the bolts off. then pushed the bolts into the foam because i couldn't get them to come out of the holes without making the holes bigger. I don't think it will be a problem. I plan on putting some spray foam in the holes and then glassing over them.
These are pics of all the bigger damage that i will need to fix. There are many other spots that should just sand down nicely but i may need to glass in some other spots. But these spots are really bad and will require the most attention.
This is where i used "great stuff" to foam in the holes where i ripped the mat bolts out. im going to cut the excess foam off then glass over the foam.
alright stickers are all scraped off. i set up my shed with some space heaters and covered the stuff thats in there with a tarp so I dont get fiberglass dust on everything. Im going to start cleaning up the spots to be fixed so i can glass them.
I went to walmart looking for EPOXY based resin today and ill they had was the resin jelly so i grabbed a can to try. i have read in many threads to use the EPOXY based stuff and not the polyester based resin. so ill see how it works.
im home from school now so ill be working on this one and the JS alot so ill update this often! as always suggestions and tips appreciated!!! thanks everyone!
Next time go to a automotive paint store and buy an eraser wheel. It goes on a drill and takes the graphics off with ease. When you use a razor blade you run the risk of cutting into the gell coat. I did the same thing at first on my 550 until i found the eraser wheel, it's like a big pencil eraser, just don't apply too much pressure or you will burn the paint. Good luck on your build...

that sounds pretty cool. i wasnt worried about nicking the gel coat too much because im going to sand the whole hull and paint it. thanks for the reply!
UPDATE: i have been in the shed all day glassing the spots. i need to get more sand paper to sand out the spots i fixed. pics soon!
ALSO. the fiberglass resin jelly isnt a jelly at all. its more like a filler. it sucked to use so i gave up with it and went with normal resin. Im gonna bring it back to wal mart tonignt!
