550/650 conversion

This is the first conversion that i have ever done, and i am not super familiar with everything that goes into converting. I just picked up a 550sx hull today that has the water pump with the rear exhaust..pretty sweet. And i have an '87 650sx with a stock motor in great running condition that i want to convert..I have read, and heard that i should go with the 44 mm carb but is that completely necessary? Is there any way that i could just take the 650 motor and throw it right into the 550? And would i need to change the impeller as well?
Thanks for any feedback

Re: 550/650 conversion

You can expect to pay $75 to $100 for the 550sx prop (they are different than the 89 and earlier impellers) you will need few other parts, one being a conversion plate for the 650 motor to be mounted to the 550 cradle. If you search this site for "Conversion" you'll get everything you need to know. Electrical changes necessary and the 550 drive line coupler and plenty of pictures to walk you through the process. Don't forget the exhaust modification to the stock exhaust.

Keep us posted, these are really fun to build (I have made 2 of them)
