2004 SXR paint build, and questions.

well my SXR is starting to look very ragged and im looking to paint and clean up the hull.

My first objective will be to fix all the dings in the gel coat, im going to do this by filling it with some sort of filler. Then prime, sand, then paint color. my idea is to put the color, color sand then place full graphics, then clear over everything... is this a good idea?

Beggining questions:

1) what should i fill the gel coat with?
2) after filling what should i sand to (grit) before priming?
3) after priming what should i sand to before color?
4) how many coats of color should i use, should i sand between coats, and do i sand to before clear.
5) is it a good idea to place graphics under clear?

well ultimately, using graphics under clear will make them last the longest, but the problem is if you ever want to remove them, them it's alot more work.

also, if your ski gets banged up on docks and you pierce the clear coat and the decal, water will start going in behind the decal and will cause the clear to flake off.

i've stripped the decals off my sxr and going to decal the entire top half black and then put decals overtop of that.

this way, every off season i can put new decals on and have a newer looking ski every year, would love to paint, but mine gets banged against docks alot and i ride almost everyday in summer

Use 5 minute epoxy to fill in the chips and deep scratches. If your ski is black on the bottom mix in some back dye, it doesnt take much dye either. Build it up a bit then sand it down. You can get black dye at west marine maybe other places as well. As far as sanding the epoxy its pretty tuff to sand maybe try 320 grit, for finishing 600 or finer.2 to 3 coats of paint a little more on the corners so when you sand your colors before you clear it you dont sand through your colors. When you color sand it before you clear it use 1000 grit or finer also use wet sanding paper for all your sanding This is when you can sand out any runs you might get . Color/ wet sand till the paint has no shine now do your clear ,more the better. I have clear coated over stickers with no problems but I wouldnt do it again.

C Ya this summer !!

P.S. Im back on an sxr just need to get to work on the thing!!

Re: 2004 SXR paint build, and questions.

Ok some miss information going on here. No need to use an epoxy for your chips, you want a polyester filler. If the are small nicks use a product like evercoat 100416, for deep gouges use 100156 (Pics below). If you need to use the 156 sand 80, 180. 240, 320. If you only need the 416 glaze go 180, 240, 320 and than prime. For primer use a catalyzed urethane primer, apply 3 meduim wet coats according to manufacturers dry times. Once cured wet sand with 600, if no imperfections you may move to cleaning and than base coat. If imperfections cannot be sanded out IE void and chips apply 416 and sand reapply primer to affected area only and re-sand. Basecoat will depend on your paint line, some colors cover differently than others within a system. IE some blacks may cover in 1-2 coats where a metallic or pearl red may require more coats to obtain opacity. Always read into manufacturers recommendations for application, but most will be medium coats until opacity is reached. Allow the product to dry and than we can move to clear coat. IMPORTANT never sand between basecoat to clear unless you plan to reapply basecoat. Clear may now be applied in 2-3 medium wet coats once again check the dry and flash times. After clear the product will have a period of time prior to sanding and buffing and applying decals.

Most important ALWAYS read the manufacturers guidelines on a product it will save you time and money in the long run.

Feel free to post or PM questions if needed.

Re: 2004 SXR paint build, and questions.

Depends on the coverage of the product, but figure 1-1.5 quarts sprayable.
