Passenger on Ocean Rides Practical?

I was talking to a buddy of mine who has done quite a bit of ocean riding, and he said he couldn't fathom a passenger out in the waters off So. Cal. He said the swells and waves would pitch a passenger right off. Come to think of it, I don't believe I've seen any passengers out in the ocean. Anyone have experience with this?

Re: Passenger on Ocean Rides Practical?

For me taking any passengers on a descent ocean ride depend purely on the conditions. If I dont think it is safe or practical, then its simple - just me on the ski.

Cheers

Chris.

Re: Passenger on Ocean Rides Practical?

I'll take the kids (teenagers) upto a mile or so offshore in good conditions, just cruising around the bays. In anything less then this it's just not fun, handling is no where near as good & speed has to be curtailed. I quite often do trips between islands going upto 15 miles offshore & would not evan consider taking a passenger with me no matter what conditions were like. I agree with Chris52, if it's not safe or practical then just 1 up.

Re: Passenger on Ocean Rides Practical?

In the IntraCoastal and river system, for me, a passenger is usually not too much of a problem. But in the open ocean, I DO NOT WANT a passenger on the craft- due to it preventing me from really being able to stand up and "ride" the boat the way that I want to. It could also make for rather "dangerous" going in extreme conditions- again due to not being able to "ride" as well.

Go a little ways offshore sometime on a "rough" day and you will understand completely.

Re: Passenger on Ocean Rides Practical?

I think it depends on who your passanger is. My wife and I rode 2 up and jumped waves back when we only had my XP. And I mean we jumped waves - not chop. It helps that she's fit and that she only weighs 95 pounds. She learned how to stand as a passenger when going over the rough stuff. We never got tossed either. Now that we have an FX HO (among other things), going out in the rough stuff is easier. I should add I also wear a special vest over my SWW vest. The extra vest has grab handles that give her plenty to hold onto without knocking me off balance.

Naturally it's easier to ride by yourself but rough water doesn't mean the pax have to stay on the beach...

enjoy,

Ray

Re: Passenger on Ocean Rides Practical?

I've ridden 2-up on huron (not an ocean but might as well be when its windy) and it's definetly not safe. I've actually never ridden in the ocean before but couldn't fathom hitting a huge roller with a passenger.... that and I prefer to stand up.

Re: Passenger on Ocean Rides Practical?

I've done it in Clear Lake and Galveston Bay. Not so bad if you're driveing, but it sucks to be passenger on anything more than glass. My old STX 750 wasn't as bad to be passenger on as my F12x.

Try it, it's doable, but tiring.
