NYC cruising

Well it looks like we are finally going to get down to NY to ride around Manhattan in a few weeks as long as the weather holds out. It looks like there are a few good gas stops around the GW and a few miles north so unless anyone has a preference we will just pick anyone to top off.

We will be coming down from peekskill so is there anything that is a must see along the way? How about a place to stop for lunch when down near the city?

Thanks
Chris

Re: NYC cruising

You can get gas at alpine marina directly across from Yonkers, approximately 5 miles north of the GW. The only place to eat near NYC is across from ground zero in Jersey City. Heading south, Make a right at the colgate sign. There is a place to eat and get gas on the left and a little further in the inlet on the right. I suggest riding around Manhattan. Down the hudson, and back by way of the east river, past Yankee stadium, under the henry husdon bridge to the huson river again. Look at a map. The east river is glass up in the bronx. Have Fun!!

Thanks! That's the plan. Down the Hudson up the east/Harlem river...

Re: NYC cruising

how recently has anyone been up the east/harlem river?

Last year they initiated and were enforcing a 5mph speed limit the length of the entire east river...

haven't been back there since... didn't want to get caught mid-river speeding and have to go 5mph the rest of the way

Re: NYC cruising

I've gone around Manhattan a couple of times this year. As far as I can see they were not enforcing the 5mph limit. Indeed, as far as I can tell, it is only a few spots that there is a 5mph. limit around the Harlem river- the Harlem river runs along the East side of Manhattan- the East River runs East-West from the Harlem river into the sound.

But please let me know when anyone plans on going, I would be happy to join.

Re: NYC cruising

I printed out a sheet from the parks dept.
http://www.nycgovparks.org/sub_thing...ake_notice.pdf

It specifically lists 2 no wake zones. One between the University bridge and High bridge and between Spuyten Duyvil and broadway bridge. Everything else is standard zones....

Maybe I should bring this paper with me!!!

Re: NYC cruising

Hey I know that already sounds like a nice long cruise for the day but if you have any extra time, I would suggest that you keep going past the Sputen Duyvil towards the Tappan Zee bridge, ride close along the west shore of the Hudson, the scenery and the river are really really beautiful there. If you ride pretty close to the shore there is an a really cool waterfall coming from way above you, I'd say about 6 miles or so north of the GWB on the Jersey side, it's a great picture (I'm guessing you're planning to have a camera with you on the ride!) or place to stop for a little break. Maybe head toward the Tappan Zee, it's about 18 or 20 miles north of the GWB, go as far as you have time for (there's a marina with gas also on the west shore in a big cove just before you get to the bridge) then turn around and catch the Spuyten on the way back.

Re: NYC cruising

Rich: I've tried looking for that waterfall several times along the Hudson and have yet to be able to find it! I've gotten a little history on the place, but don't know where it is.

Thanks Rich, We are starting from Peekskill so I will definitly look for the waterfall for a picture opportunity. on the way down and back... Are there any obstructions I should look for when going close to shore??
