Re: Lake Superior Running...

Mark,
There are several good marina's in Bayfield to launch from. Be aware that since the Apostle Islands are a Federal Park you can not take your PWC with 1/4 mile of shore. (That sucks)

Almost all of my riding has been done out of Duluth. From there we have riden to Port Wing WI, Grand Marais MN, Grand Portage MN and Thunder Bay Canada. I am planning a trip in 2008 to circumnavigate the lake if you are interested.

Hey Jay,

I'm interested in finding out the dates on your trip. Let's see if we can make it happen this year!

Re: Lake Superior Running...

Hey Jay I live in Duluth. I think I spoke to you once long ago about a Superior ride but we never kept in touch regarding it. What are your plans for this summer? Where do you live? Circumnavigating the lake could take a long time? Are you sure there are enough fuel stops? What are you riding? Presumably a fuel efficient four stroke?

My dream tour (for much later in my life) is to take a ski across Superior, down Lake Michigan, through Chicago via the Chicago River down to the Mississippi and take whatever river it is that breaks off in Alabama down to the Gulf.

Regards,
WIslxer

Re: Lake Superior Running...

WIslxer & Pat,
Let me answer the easy question first. I live in Rapid City, SD. I grew up in Minnesota and lived in Duluth for awhile. For the last 5 years I have been going to Lake Superior twice a year to ride. Our trips usually start in Duluth. We have ridden to Port Wing and then across to Two Harbors and back to Duluth. We usually start in Duluth and ride to Grand Marias where we spend the night. Then on to Grand Portage and then back to Duluth. We have started in Grand Portage and ridden to Thunder Bay and back.

As far as circumnavigating the lake it's been in the planning stage for the last 3 years. We were going to go last year but one person hurt his back and the other ski broke.

The plan would be to try the trip in July. I am open to the dates. August would be the second choice. While doing research on weather patterns with the NWS and NOAA, July is the best. Best temperatures, best wind and wave conditions.

While plotting the trip it would be about 1,300 miles. Most fuel stops are at the most 50-60 miles. There is one stretch where it would be about 120 miles. The trip would take about 10 days. If you write to me at my e-mail address I can send you the spread sheet with the stops, mileage and travel days.

Three people would be ideal. Five would be the most. And since I'm going to do this one way or another I will even go with just one other person.

As for the ski I ride, it's a Seadoo GTX-DI. Two stroke fuel injected. I can travel 120-130 before a refill. For mileage it's the best I have found to date. The new Seadoo GTX 4 cycle a close second. And yes, I know I have to carry extra oil. (That’s a pain in the butt.)

If you are interested you can write me at
jay2a8@rap.midco.net

I look forward to hearing from you.

Re: Lake Superior Running...

What ever happened to the planning for your trip?

are there caves that can be explored by jet ski near duluth? it would be worth the drive up from st paul to see that.
