Anyone ride PWC on whitewater rivers?

If so how about some links to discussion and videos. What is generally considered a safe water depth to run them on plane without damaging either the bottom or the pump from sucking junk off the bottom? Draft of ski up on plane?

Just looking to read and view some information if someone had links or pictures. Getting an education by asking questions. No ski at present.

Re: Anyone ride PWC on whitewater rivers?

oh ok...

For reference i have ran my SX-R in pretty shallow water at WOT (not on purpose)...maybe ~1.5 feet. Scared the crap out of me when i saw it. The guys who ride the ocean ride even shallower when boarding their skis to minimize the dragging distance.

if you are moving at a good rate of speed and not accelerating these things can go pretty shallow.

Re: Anyone ride PWC on whitewater rivers?

This is the type of whitewater riding I was referring to. Some rivers can provide the challenging site. Parts of the Rogue in Oregon could increase the puker factor.

Some time ago I watch an Olympic kayak team training, I believe in Calif somewhere on a similar manmade course. Any idea of its location and current use?

Re: Anyone ride PWC on whitewater rivers?

Swift water rescue teams practice often in the outfalls from dams. Minimum depth for all boats is stated at 2 feet. My ´09 Yam FXHO has been ridden on plane in water 1 foot deep with no problem. I have ridden skis in water 6 inches. As for whitewater, it all depends how crazy you want to get. The main problem with ´white´water is all the air in the water. That causes massive cavitation and loss of all thrust. Which, in turn, means all loss of control until the pump gains purchase on the water again. There is an old video of pros navigating the New River Gorge on skis and runabouts. If a jet boat can handle the waters you are looking at, so can a pwc.

Magnum pump

Yes, white water riding can be done and is very fun.
I've done it on a Superjet.

Those videos are on man made rapids. Would be cool to see an X-Games Event from that...
